When many people think of cruising as the months turn colder and summer fades into fall, they automatically think of voyages to Canada and New England filled with colorful foliage and quaint seaside cities. Here, we’re going over the best time to go based on the weather, the pricing, the crowds, and — of course — leaf peeping opportunities.

When is the best time for a Canada & New England cruise?

The cruise season in eastern Canada and New England generally starts in late April and runs through October, with ships skipping the coldest months of the year in the region in favor of warmer destinations during late fall and winter.

Holland America Line Canada and New England Cruise Review - Best Time for a Canada & New England Cruise

There’s no “bad” time to visit during the season. However, Canada/New England cruises are generally equated to cruising in autumn for one major reason: leaf peeping. The colorful fall foliage that can be seen if you cruise at just the right time are a major selling point for lots of cruisers, especially those that don’t live in a region that affords them the opportunity to see the vibrant leaves at home. With that being said, other parts of the Canada/New England cruising season have their benefits too.

Best time to cruise to Canada and New England: Weather

When you’re planning an eastern Canada and New England cruise, you probably have several weather-related questions, such as “What months in Canada and New England are the warmest?” or “Which month has the least amount of rain?” So, we will try to answer them below.

Best Time to Cruise Canada/New England: Temperatures

Let’s break down the average high temperatures for three popular Canada/New England itinerary destinations to give you an idea of what to expect during your cruise.

Bar Harbor, Maine:

  • April/May: mid-50s to high 60s
  • June/July/August: mid-70s to 80
  • September/October: high 50s to high 60s

Halifax, Nova Scotia:

  • April/May: high 40s to high 50s
  • June/July/August: high 60s to mid-70s
  • September/October: mid-50s to high 60s

Québec City, Quebec:

  • April/May: high 40s to 60
  • June/July/August: low 70s to high 70s
  • September/October: low 50s to high 60s

Based on the average high temperatures, July and August are the warmest months to visit Canada and New England, right in the middle of the summer season. If you want a cooler experience, visit in April or May at the beginning of the season (you’ll avoid the highest crowd levels as well!) or in September and October at the end of the season.

Best Time to Cruise Canada/New England: Rain

The rainiest months during Canada and New England’s cruising season are May and June. If avoiding rain is your priority, consider booking a voyage in August or September — the least rainy months during the cruise season. And bonus — if you book towards the end of September, you might luck out with the start of the leaves changing from green to vibrant red, orange, and yellow hues.

What is the best time to cruise to Canada and New England for leaf peeping?

As just mentioned, the leaves can start to change towards the end of September in the New England and eastern Canada region. However, this is dependent on a number of factors (mostly temperature and moisture). It does not occur at the exact same time every year.

If the end of a summer is unusually chilly or the start of autumn is especially windy and rainy, that can affect when the leaves change and for how long they stay on the trees. Booking a cruise in advance solely for the purpose of leaf-peeping is always a gamble.

With that being said, your best shot for leaf-peeping is in October, right towards the end of the cruise season. Temperatures are warmer at the start of the month, with average highs in the upper 60s. Towards the end of the month, highs are usually in the upper 50s.

Best Time for a Canada & New England Cruise

How do you avoid cruise crowds in Canada and New England?

The peak season for cruising in New England and eastern Canada is August through the end of the season in October. August is a popular time to visit because it’s the warmest month of the year and summer is still in full swing.

September is a bit of an in-between time because it’s still pretty warm at the start of the month, and the end of the month often brings the first bit of change towards autumn leaves. Since October is the prime month for leaf-peeping, lots of guests head out on voyages that month to catch a glimpse of the vibrant colors and cool coastal weather.

If you aren’t planning your cruise to see the fall leaves and avoiding crowds is a priority, your best bet is to sail in April, May, or June. Just keep in mind that April can be chilly, and May and June are the rainiest months. Weigh whether or not the chance of rain during some of your port days is a big deal to you, and choose accordingly.

Based on all of this info, you might think that July is the sweet spot for avoiding the cold and the worst of the rain and crowds, but that’s only partially true. While you will have warm weather and a tad bit less rain than in May or June, July is the start of peak tourist season in New England and Canada. Crowds will be especially high due to lots of people taking family vacations.

How to Choose a Canada and New England Cruise With Fewer Kids On Board

If you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere on your ship with fewer kids, take a cruise in April, May, September, or October — when school is in session — with late April and early-mid May being the safest bets.

Longer cruises are also a better bet on having fewer kids on your ship, as families with young kids don’t tend to take as many extended-length voyages. If you have the time and money, look into Canada/New England itineraries that are at least eight nights or longer. Bonus: you’ll have more ports to explore and more time to enjoy your ship!

What is the cheapest month to cruise to Canada and New England?

In most cases, the cheapest cruise fares you’ll find for a voyage to Canada and New England will be at the very start of the season at the end of April and into May. It’s still chilly in many destinations in the region and the busy summer season isn’t yet in full swing. This is often referred to as shoulder season.

Plus, even though fall also gets chilly, spring doesn’t command a premium the way fall does because it’s not the prime season for leaf-peeping.

If budget is a major factor in the planning of your vacation, consider looking into a one-way sailing. For Canada/New England routes, they often start in New York City or a port in New England and end in Quebec City. This is especially helpful if you live within driving distance of either the starting or ending port. Not only might the cruise fares be a bit cheaper, but you’ll only have to pay for a one-way flight.

What cruise lines go to Canada and New England?

All the major U.S. based cruise lines sail Canada/New England itineraries, plus a number of luxury brands as well. The cruise lines where you’ll find the most options for a voyage up the northeastern seaboard include Princess, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Viking, Ponant, Oceania, and Holland America.

Other lines that offer Canada & New England options are Seabourn, Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, Crystal, Cunard, MSC, and Celebrity. Lines including Carnival and Disney occasionally offer one-off type voyages to Canada and New England as well.

cruise shore excursions with the cruise line

What types of clothes should I pack for a Canada and New England cruise?

When cruising to Canada and New England during the summer months, pack as you would for a trip north in the summer or for most warm-weather cruises. Plus, add in a couple pairs of pants and extra sweaters for layering just in case. That means t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, sundresses, polo shirts, button-downs, sandals, and sneakers for walking around in port.

It could get a bit chilly on an overcast day and definitely will most nights, which is where the sweaters, a sweatshirt, and some jeans or other pants will come in handy. I also find it a necessity to have at least a sweater or two for dinnertime on the ship, as the air conditioning can make it a bit chilly indoors even on the warmest sailings.

For voyages towards the beginning or end of the Canada/New England season: layer, layer, layer! Even in April or October you might have some warm t-shirt weather when the sun is out and high. However, spring and fall cruises will also have plenty of chilly moments as well. Bring sweaters, hoodies, and a jacket that you can layer over short and long-sleeve shirts. Pack a few pairs of shorts, but be sure to have plenty of pant options as well. Long dresses with warmer fabric can work for exploring port (especially when layered with a nice jacket or sweater) or going to dinner.

Expect to wear socks and comfy sneakers, boots, or other enclosed shoes in port and maybe even on the ship on colder days. Bring a hat or knit headband to keep your ears warm — especially in April and October. A raincoat with hood and umbrella are must-haves during the rainiest months of the season.

Galveston is an excellent drive-to option for cruisers in Texas and its surrounding states. Driving to a cruise port can be a cheaper option for families than flying, but parking doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Despite being a relatively small island, Galveston has several parking options in addition to the official parking facilities at the cruise port.

Most lots are concentrated around Galveston’s legacy terminals, Terminal 25 and 28, formerly Terminals 1 and 2. In 2022, Royal Caribbean built its own state-of-the-art cruise terminal called Pier 10, adding a third cruise pier to the Port of Galveston.

Falstaff Cruise Parking

Falstaff Cruise Parking is the farthest lot on this list from the port, at 1 mile. However, shuttle service is available from this 24/7-monitored parking facility.

While the shuttle rides are complimentary, Falstaff has bundled a portion of its shuttle fees into the price of parking.

Galveston Cruise Parking Tips

  • Not every parking lot accommodates every cruise line; check each website for details and hours.
  • Cash is not accepted at most lots, including the Port of Galveston. Book parking with a credit card and bring it with you.
  • Cruise lines recommend dropping off all passengers and luggage at the pier prior to parking, but nearly all shuttles accommodate luggage. If you have a larger party, you might be charged a fee for taking up more than a few seats on the shuttle.
  • An important caveat when it comes to cruise parking is that RVs and oversized vehicles are typically not allowed. When RVs are allowed at a cruise parking lot, the rates are higher than listed.
  • In addition to port-approved and third-party parking lots, long-term parking and shuttle service can be found in conjunction with many of Galveston’s hotels.

Located just 45 minutes from the open seas, Galveston is well situated in the Gulf of Mexico for sailings to ports like Cozumel, Mexico; Belize; or Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Royal Caribbean christened its new, $125 million Galveston cruise terminal called Pier 10 in November 2022. This new terminal can accommodate the largest vessels from its Oasis Class to its new Icon Class. The cruise line currently has a fleet of three ships sailing from Galveston including Allure of the Seas.

Princess has returned to Galveston after years away, bringing Regal Princess and Ruby Princess for a variety of Caribbean itineraries as well as a special sailing through the Panama Canal.

Norwegian Prima, the line’s 2022 introduction godmothered by Katy Perry, will sail weeklong itineraries from Galveston in late 2023.

Additionally, Disney Magic sails four- to seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries from Texas.

Which airport is closest to the Galveston cruise port?

The George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and the William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) are both commercial airports in Houston serving Galveston. There is no direct airlift to the island of Galveston, so cruisers outside of driving distance must fly via Houston.

The Galveston cruise port is about 70 miles from the Intercontinental airport (75 minutes) or 41 miles from Hobby (45 minutes).

How do you get to and from the Galveston cruise terminal?

There are three cruise terminals at the Galveston cruise port.

Terminal 25 (formerly Cruise Terminal 1) typically hosts Carnival and Princess ships and is located at 2502 Harborside Drive.

Royal Caribbean’s Pier 10 (aka Terminal 3) is located about a mile east of the other legacy terminals at Harborside Drive and 14th Street. Use the address 1152 Royal Caribbean Way.

Shuttle service from the airport to Galveston is significantly cheaper than booking a rideshare through Uber or Lyft. Still, expect prices in the $100 range due to distance.

If you’re driving, the Port of Galveston can be reached from the north and west by taking Exit 1C off Interstate 45 South toward Galveston Island. Once you turn left on Harborside Drive, continue nearly 5 miles to make another left on Kempner/22nd Street. From there, follow signs to your cruise terminal.

The Port of Galveston can also be reached by ferry service. From the east, take State Highway 87 West toward Galveston Island to board the Port Bolivar vehicle ferry system. Exit the ferry onto Highway 87/Ferry Road, then turn right on Harborside Drive. Continue with directions as listed above.

Is there parking at the Galveston cruise port?

Yes, there is parking at the Galveston cruise port. There are economy parking lot options at the Galveston cruise terminal. Additionally, there’s a “park and walk” option in a covered parking garage closer to the ships.

Cruisers can secure their parking space in advance through the Port of Galveston’s online service, ensuring a prepaid, discounted rate and a guaranteed spot.

For more information on parking at Galveston cruise port, click here. We break down all the options including location, price, and if shuttle service is available.

Which hotels are closest to the Galveston cruise terminal?

There are various hotels for all budgets near the Galveston cruise terminals. These include more than a dozen offering complimentary shuttle service to your cruise ship.

Galveston is already well known to Southerners as a resort destination. So, it’s not a bad idea to consider spending a few days here before or after your cruise. In addition to more vacation time, some hotels accommodate secure, long-term parking.

Physically closest to the cruise port is the Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21. Less than a half-mile away from the Galveston cruise terminal, the Harbor House is within walking distance. If you don’t want to lug your bags 8 minutes down the road, it’s an easy 3-minute ride. Cruisers who drove in for their sailing can park their car at the hotel for $15 per night, plus tax.

Cruisers looking for a great value when it comes to driving in for their Galveston cruise can consider a stay at the Holiday Inn Resort Galveston (On The Beach, an IHG Hotel). This Holiday Inn offers competitive rates to stay, as well as only $8 per night for long-term cruise parking for the first five nights. After the maximum of $40 is reached, your car will remain parked for free. Not only is the parking rate super reasonable, but the Holiday Inn Resort Galveston also offers a free shuttle to the cruise port.

From recognizable chain hotel brands to boutique properties like 19th-century bed-and-breakfast George Manor, Galveston has a stay available for every taste. The good news is that with only 41.2 square miles of land mass in Galveston (it’s only 3 miles wide), there is nowhere on the island that is super far from the cruise port.

What is there to do in Galveston?

From its resort-style beaches to its historic neighborhood streets, Galveston has the added benefit of being a destination with or without its cruise facilities. Take the kids to enjoy Boardwalk-style rides and amusements at Pleasure Pier or stroll antique shops with a loved one admiring charming architecture along the way.

Apart from its activity-packed shores, one of Galveston’s marquee attractions is Moody Gardens, with a 10-story tall pyramid housing an aquarium as well as a collection of 1,700 plants and animals. Moody Mansion pays homage to the one of the wealthiest families to call Galveston home. There are even self-guided tours of the Victorian-era estate available.

Take to the indoors with a museum visit or go fishing under the Texan sun along one of the Seawall’s many piers. Whatever the mood or the weather, Galveston shows up with plenty to see, do, and experience year-round.

Do you need a passport to sail from Galveston?

The requirement for a passport on a cruise is dictated by where your sailing begins and ends. If your cruise departs and arrives round trip from Galveston, that means it is considered a “closed loop” sailing within the U.S. Therefore, you would not need a passport; U.S. citizens just need a U.S. ID and birth certificate to sail.

Still, it’s always helpful to have a passport. This is especially true when visiting any foreign ports of call like Mexico or Grand Cayman. In the unlikely event you don’t make it back onboard your ship in time for departure, you’ll still need a passport to travel home or to the next port.

Always consult with your cruise line on travel requirements for your entire party prior to booking or boarding.

Conclusion: Is Galveston a good cruise port?

Galveston is a solid choice (and the only option) as a departure port for families looking to take a cruise within range of Texas. The closest other cruise port to Galveston is nearly 400 miles away in New Orleans.

After more than 20 years as a cruise port, Galveston has added a third, state-of-the-art cruise terminal and new ships and cruise lines all within the span of a single year. In addition to its cruise offerings, the adjacent city of Galveston is well suited for vacationers of all ages, with a variety of accommodation offerings and plenty of activities to enjoy.

Although the location of the closest commercial airport is in Houston, nearly an hour away, Galveston offers the Southern cruise market an appealing drive-to option bordering the Gulf of Mexico. According to the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, Galveston is the fourth most popular cruise port in North America, following the busy cruise ports of Florida.

Are you looking to cruise without a passport? For U.S. citizens, passports are not required for all cruises. While we do recommend having a passport just in case, these are the top cruise destinations you can visit without one.

Can you cruise without a passport?

Yes, you can cruise without a passport (in certain situations). For U.S. citizens, a passport is not required for closed loop cruises. A closed loop cruise is a cruise that begins and ends in the same U.S. port.

For a closed loop cruise, a birth certificate and a government issued ID are the only forms of documentation required. The birth certificate must be the original or a certified copy with the raised seal. A photocopy will not be permitted.

Keep in mind that these requirements are for U.S. citizens only. For all other nationalities, a passport is generally required to cruise.

things you should never do on a cruise

Of course, if you are traveling internationally, U.S. citizens will need a passport. A passport is required for all international flights and for any cruise that embarks or disembarks in a foreign country.

Further, passports are also required for cruises that begin and end in different locations (open loop cruises).

Which islands are visited does vary slightly by the cruise ship and cruise line. However, all islands offer a variety of popular activities like beach breaks, island tours, snorkeling, and historic and cultural tours. There will also be adventure activities like zip lining and off-road tours at most ports of call.

Caribbean Cruise Planning Guide

Again, do keep in mind if you decide to cruise without a passport, you might not be able to get off the ship in certain locations. For example, the Caribbean island of Martinique requires that all cruise passengers have a valid passport to go ashore.

You can cruise to the Bahamas without a passport

The Bahamas is another popular cruise destination that you can visit without a passport. Normally, these cruises depart from the East Coast of the United States, primarily from Florida homeports. If you are looking for a shorter duration cruise or just a quick getaway, then a Bahamas cruise is definitely for you.

While you are probably familiar with Nassau, Bahamas, this region is also home to many cruise line private destinations. These private islands offer exclusive access for passengers sailing with the cruise line. These islands usually offer included food, beach access with loungers, and other amenities.

Perfect Day at CocoCay

For instance, MSC Cruises has a brand new Bahamian paradise at Ocean Cay Marine Reserve. Virgin Voyages has its new Beach Club at Bimini. Additionally, who could forget Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay. There is also Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay, Carnival Cruise Line’s Half Moon Cay, and Princess Cays.

You can cruise without a passport from Seattle to Alaska

For many, the seasonal cruise destination of Alaska is high on their bucket lists. An Alaskan cruise even lures those who wouldn’t necessarily consider a cruise. These vacations are more about the destination than the cruise ship. Cruises to Alaska appeal to nature lovers, photographers, and explorers. On an Alaskan cruise, you can set off in search of glacial vistas, wildlife encounters, and some of the freshest seafood.

Most major cruise lines offer sailings in this region. The most popular U.S. embarkation port for Alaska cruises is Seattle. Though, there are also roundtrip cruises from Vancouver and one-way itineraries.

These itineraries usually include port stops in JuneauKetchikan, and Skagway, Alaska. These itineraries can visit Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia as well. These ports of call offer a variety of shore excursion options from helicopter rides over glaciers, to whale watching, bear sightings, salmon bakes, and historic gold route tours.

Keep in mind that even though you are not required to have a passport to cruise to Alaska, some excursions like the White Pass Railway in Skagway may require a passport.

Do you need a passport for Hawaii?

The accessibility of the Hawaiian islands makes it a popular cruise destination especially for those looking to stay within the United States.

Most Hawaiian cruises depart from the island of Oahu, visiting the Big Island and Maui. Some cruises also visit the island of Kauai. With attractions like Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, and a selection of luaus, Oahu definitely requires a couple days to explore either pre-cruise or post cruise.

The Big Island‘s landscape is very diverse with volcanoes, mountainous terrain, beaches, rainforests, and everything in between. One of our favorite excursions was a helicopter ride over the island.

An over-night visit to the island of Maui is common on a Hawaiian cruise as well. Some of Maui’s most popular attractions include the Road to Hana and Haleakala Crater.

cruise without a passport

Several cruise lines normally have ships making stops in the region. As the only ship sailing in Hawaii year-round, NCL’s Pride of America is an easy choice. This Americana-themed ship usually sails a 7-night round-trip itinerary from Honolulu offering a comprehensive Polynesian experience.

You can cruise without a passport to Bermuda

If you are looking to cruise without a passport, Bermuda is another popular choice. This British territory is home to some of the friendliest people and arguably the best beaches and natural landscapes in the Atlantic.

Given that the island is further north than many of the other popular tropical destinations, the weather is a bit more seasonal here. Therefore, cruises to Bermuda generally occur from April to October. Still, that is almost half of the year to find some vacation time to enjoy all that Bermuda has to offer.

Best Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise

Many of the major cruise lines usually have ships that visit Bermuda. Most even offer two or three day stays to enjoy this beautiful location. You can use this time to explore Kings Wharf and other popular stops like St. George’s and Hamilton.

A Bermuda cruise might be the perfect choice for those living in the Northeastern United States as there will be no flying involved. Most Bermuda cruises leave from New York or Cape Liberty, New Jersey. A few also depart from Boston, MA, Baltimore, MD, and occasionally some southern ports like Florida.

You can go on a Mexican Riviera cruise without a passport

For those living on the West Coast, the Mexican Riviera might be the perfect destination to which to cruise without a passport.

Ports in the Mexican Riviera, like Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, offer amazing beaches, immersive cultural and historical experiences, and a festive atmosphere day and night. The Mexican Riviera is much like the Caribbean for West Coasters.

Like many of the tropical cruise regions, there are plenty of beach breaks, island tours, food tastings, and nature excursions to experience in the Mexican Riviera. Plus, there are exclusive offerings like whale watching, cultural shows like Rhythms of the Night, and some unique landscapes that you can’t find in the Caribbean.

Mexican Riviera cruises most often depart from California homeports from brands including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line. Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas also sails this region.

Do you need a passport to cruise Canada and New England?

Last but not least, you can also cruise without a passport to Canada and New England. Canada/New England cruise itineraries are seasonal, running from May to October with the majority of sailings occurring during the Fall.

As native New Englanders, we sometimes take the fall foliage for granted. However, this seasonal change is a sight to behold for many.

Popular ports of call include Boston, MA; Bar Harbor, ME; Portland, ME; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and St. John, New Brunswick. Each of these ports offers its own historic and coastal charm.

In our homeport of Boston, you can learn more about the founding of the United States by trekking the Boston Freedom Trail. You can dive into the history of the Titanic when in Halifax. Or, you can see the Victorian era architecture and historic homes of Portland and visit Arcadia National Park in Bar Harbor.

Our local cuisine is another great reason to cruise to Canada and New England. Portland is home to the one and only Maine Lobster, but the waters off these coasts are home to other seafood delights as well. You can enjoy a rich and creamy cup of New England clam chowder or some Rhode Island style calamari. There are also plenty of sweet treats including maple syrup, whoopie pies, and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream from nearby Vermont.

Like Bermuda cruises, popular embarkation ports for Canada/New England cruises are in the Northeast. New York, Cape Liberty (NJ), Baltimore, and Boston are the most popular.

PortMiami is recognized as the busiest cruise port. This “Cruise Capital” of the world processed over 6.8 million passengers in 2019, with more growth on the horizon. The Miami cruise port is home to some of the newest and most innovative ships afloat.

Not to mention, this cruise port has some of the most modern terminal facilities with more on the way. If you are planning a cruise from this southern Florida location, we have our complete Guide to the Miami Cruise Port to help answer many frequently asked questions.

Complete Guide to the Miami Cruise Port

Cruise Lines That Sail From Miami Cruise Port

The Miami Cruise Port is ideally located just outside of the Downtown Miami area. Just over the causeway on Dodge Island in the beautiful Biscayne Bay, PortMiami offers some of the best sailaway views.

Guide to Miami Cruise Port

PortMiami is the homeport for a number of brands. These brands include Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Royal Caribbean, Viking, and Virgin Voyages.

Not to mention, several brands also include Miami as a port of call on some itineraries.

When arriving at the Miami Cruise Port for your cruise, there will be large electronic signs directing passengers to the correct terminals. Given that the Miami Cruise Port is bustling with cruise ships year-round, it’s no surprise that there are several terminals to process passengers.

The good news is that they are mostly all adjacent to each other along the waterfront.

Terminals at the Miami Cruise Port

Terminal AA/AAA are the projected cruise terminals to be built and financed by MSC Cruises. The projected completion of these terminals were scheduled for 2022. Though, the future is still unclear, as recent talks indicate a potential merger with the Disney terminal project.

Terminal A is Royal Caribbean’s state of the art facility. This terminal was completed in November 2018 in time to process the largest cruise ship in the world, Symphony of the Seas.

Navigator of the Seas Cruise Tips

Terminal B is Norwegian Cruise Line’s new terminal under construction. The Pearl of Miami which will accommodate NCL’s largest vessels was estimated to be completed in 2020; however, no recent updates have been provided.

Terminal C also belongs to Norwegian Cruise Line.

Terminals D & E service Carnival Cruise Line guests. Terminal F is Carnival’s brand new terminal that is estimated to be complete in time for the arrival of Carnival Celebration in 2022. A recent groundbreaking ceremony was held to get this project underway.

Terminal G primarily services MSC Cruises and Disney Cruise Line. Though, both cruise lines had plans of building new terminals of their own. Disney Cruise Line was pending a deal for a new Terminal K.

Terminal J services more boutique cruise lines like Viking, Crystal Cruises, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas.

Top Things to Know About Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady

Terminal V is the new terminal currently under construction for Virgin Voyage. The terminal was originally estimated to be complete in 2021, though it has been confirmed that it won’t be ready for Scarlet Lady’s debut.

Flying to Miami for a Cruise

Given Miami’s ideal location, this cruise port offers an array of cruise itineraries. Cruisers will find routes to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, Panama Canal transits, Transatlantic cruises, and more departing from Miami, Florida.

While many Florida locals do drive to the port, most cruisers fly here to embark on their cruise vacations. The closest airport is the Miami International Airport (MIA).

Guide to Miami Cruise Port

This airport is located less than 10 miles from PortMiami. Based on traffic, this trip should take somewhere between 20-30 minutes.

While several major airlines do fly to Miami, carriers such as Jet Blue and Southwest have hubs in Fort Lauderdale. Luckily, the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is also located under 30 miles away. With traffic, this trip should take between 45 minutes to an hour.

Related Post: How to Budget for a Cruise

Knowing this information, you should plan your flights appropriately if you plan to fly in the day of your cruise. Though, we never recommend doing so. We always recommend cruisers fly the day before to avoid any potential travel delays.

Transportation to and from the Miami Cruise Port

Once you arrive at the airport, you will have several transportation methods. Some of these options will depend on whether you fly in the day before or the day of your cruise.

As mentioned previously, if you live within driving distance of the Miami Cruise Port, you will likely be driving to the cruise terminal. If you are driving, we will discuss parking options a bit later. However, there are several other transportation options available.

Disney Cruise Line Motorcoach

If you are arriving the day of your cruise, a cruise line transfer from the airport might be the easiest option, though likely not the cheapest. Many cruise lines offer an option to book this transportation pre-cruise.

Once at the airport, a cruise line representative will greet you at baggage claim and escort you and your luggage to the check-in area. After checking-in, you will board the next departing bus to the ship. These transfers are available from both airports and can run upwards of $30 per person depending on the airport and the cruise line.

Further, they run on set time schedules.

There are also several independent shuttle options. These shuttle options may include shuttles from the airport to the cruise terminal and/or hotel shuttles. Some of these options include GO Airport shuttle, Florida Shuttle Transportation, and more.

Most often, these shuttles are a shared service that run on a set time schedule, or a private transfer can be arranged.

Best Ways to Get from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral

Shared Ride Services are probably the most popular form of transportation in recent years. Popular apps like Uber and Lyft are allowed to pick-up/drop-off passengers at both the airport and the cruise port.

The cost of using these services varies based on the type of vehicle you choose but the average for an UberX is around $25 for Miami and around $40 for Fort Lauderdale.

Similarly, taxis are available from Miami for a flat rate of $27 and around $75 from Fort Lauderdale.

Related Post: What to Wear on a Cruise

If you are up to taking public transportation, it could save you some money. Though, it will certainly not be the most convenient. Tri-Rail, Metro Rail, and Brightline have services that will get you to Downtown Miami, but you will still need additional transportation for the last mile or so to the port.

Parking at the Miami Cruise Port

If you are driving to the Miami Cruise Port, the PortMiami cruise parking is the most convenient option available. This “official” cruise parking is the only parking available at all cruise terminals.

Designated disabled permit parking spaces are available in each of these garages.

On embarkation day, the garages and Lot #2 are open and staffed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. You may drop off your luggage at the terminal before parking. There is also a free shuttle from each parking facility to the terminal if needed.

The current parking rate is $22 per night. The Royal Caribbean Terminal A garage rate is slightly higher at $25 per day. If someone is dropping you off or picking you up, short term parking is available for $8, and there are also two cell phone waiting lots.

The Port does not own or operate any off-site parking facilities. Though, independent off-site parking lots can be a much cheaper option. This option is not the most convenient, as you will need to take a shuttle from the lots/garages in the Downtown Miami area.

Some area options include Premier Cruise Parking and Safe Cruise Parking, which can save you over 50% a day.

Of course, if you opt for a pre-cruise stay in a hotel, some hotels also offer cruise and stay packages which can include parking.

Hotels Near the Miami Cruise Port

When preparing for your cruise, you should consider planning a pre-cruise stay before the vacation. When cruising from the Miami Cruise Port, you will have a number of hotel options. Even if you are flying into the Fort Lauderdale airport, we would recommend securing a hotel in Miami so you are closer to the cruise port in the morning.

Guide to Miami Cruise Port

The Downtown and Brickell neighborhoods of Miami offer plenty of hotel choices. Some popular options include Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay, Intercontinental Miami, and Kimpton Epic Hotel. Our personal favorite is East Miami located in the Brickell neighborhood.

If you want to spice up your pre-cruise stay, you could always spend a few days in South Beach. For more selections, see our guide to the Top Hotels Near the Miami Cruise Port.

A popular departure point for Carnival Cruise Line and Princess Cruises in California is Long Beach. This coastal city is nestled between much larger, well known locations in Southern California. Still, Long Beach, CA holds its own as a destination worth visiting before or after a cruise. If you have an upcoming cruise departing from this destination, we highly suggest a pre-cruise or post-cruise stay. To help you find the ideal accommodation, we have our list of the Best Hotels Near the Long Beach Cruise Port.

The Best Hotels Near Long Beach Cruise Port

Hyatt Centric The Pike Long Beach

With a great location for shopping, dining, and sightseeing, this hotel was our pick when we cruised from Long Beach this past January.

The Best Hotels Bear the Long Beach Cruise Port

Nestled in the midst of the outdoor Pike Outlets shopping area and a block away from a Starbucks, we tested out this hotel before our Carnival Panorama Mexican Riviera Cruise.

The Hyatt Centric The Pike Long Beach was undergoing renovations during our stay. It appeared that our room was not yet updated. Still, the spacious King Bed room provided plenty of the typical amenities. Among the in-room offerings were a Keurig coffeemaker, a spacious work area, and a 32″ HD flat-screen TV.

The 300+ square foot lodging was also home to an over-sized bathroom, complete with a walk-in marble shower with a waterfall shower head.

This 150 room hotel also includes a 24 hour fitness center, a rooftop pool area (which was closed during our visit), and a business center. Also, it is located across the street from the popular Aquarium of the Pacific.

The hotel is just under two miles away from the cruise terminal.

Hotel Maya

Another cruiser favorite, Hotel Maya is located within walking distance of the cruise terminal. This resort offers a variety of amenities to help you rejuvenate whether it is before or after your voyage.

A retreat might be a better label for this lodging with its wood tones and natural elements scattered throughout the property.

Inside your 470 square foot king bedroom, you will be treated to a great night’s sleep on your luxury cotton sheets. The decor will make you feel like you are staying with a friend, not at some big brand hotel.

All rooms come equipped with the expected amenities, including a flat screen HD television, coffee maker, and a work station with an ergonomic desk chair. There are also artistic pops of color that add to the ambiance. There is no need to unpack your toiletries as all rooms feature Crabtree and Evelyn bath products.

You can enjoy a cabana at the ocean front pool, or tip your toes in the beach adjacent to the hotel. You can also check the hotel’s schedule for classes such as sunrise yoga or beach workouts to help you get energized for your trip.

At night, you can enjoy a cocktail from Fuego, the onsite bar and restaurant, alongside one of the fire pits that are adjacent to the beach!

The Renaissance Long Beach Hotel

Located downtown, but still accessible to major shoreline attractions and the cruise terminal, the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel offers traditional hotel accommodations with a little California flare. The Cove Hotel

For those looking for something special, the boutique Cove Hotel offers plenty of charm and amenities. The hotel mixes indoor and outdoor elements that are the hallmark to the Golden State. While the hotel is a bit further away than some of our other suggestions for the best hotels near the Long Beach cruise terminal, it is still only about a 10 minute ride away.

This resort features everything you need for a relaxing stay. The pampering starts with a complimentary glass of champagne upon check-in. Then, it continues with the centrally located sundeck with a heated swimming pool, cabanas, and fire pits in the evening.

Hotel Current

Although, this popular resort is securely located between many of Long Beach’s popular shoreline attractions, as well as the city’s downtown amusements.

Current Hotel One of the Best Hotels near Long Beach Cruise Terminal

Located slightly over 15 minutes from the cruise terminal, it might be a bit further away than other hotels, but it does offer shuttle access to and from the airport. The hotel also offers a Cruise and Snooze package, which includes a round trip shuttle to and from the cruise terminal and up to 14 days of parking.

Complete with a stylish bathroom and shower, these rooms provide all the comforts of home utilizing an eco-friendly design.

The Queen Mary

For those cruise lovers who want to experience some old-time cruise charm, there is no better accommodation than the Queen Mary. Docked alongside the Carnival terminal in Long Beach, you are within walking distance to your cruise ship.

The Queen Mary is a living piece of history. This historic vessel is a docked museum. The ship does maintain much of its original character and ambiance. Boarding the Queen Mary will transport cruisers back to the 1940’s and 1950’s. It still features much of the original artwork, woodwork, and many of the amenities from that time period. So, do keep that in mind when booking a room.

You will be staying in a cruise ship cabin that dates back 70+ years. The charm and elegance of the art deco era will be on full display, though it will lack some of your modern conveniences.

For history buffs or cruise aficionados, a night on the Queen Mary might just top your list of best hotels near the Long Beach cruise port. You might even get to experience some of the “ghost stories” for yourself.

One free tour is included with a hotel reservation, but we recommend you explore more of the vessel. You can do so on your own or purchase additional tours.

If you’d prefer not to spend the night, you can still tour the ship like we did. During our visit, we purchased two tours and then spent some additional time exploring on our own. Each tour has a unique theme and visits various areas of the ship while telling the history, hauntings, and functionality of the vessel.

The Queen Mary’s Deluxe Stateroom with a king bed is advertised as the ideal accommodations for the “first class” traveler. Coming in around 200 square feet, it will feel just as cramped as your typical modern day cruise ship cabin.

These rooms do come equipped with a few modern conveniences, including HD televisions, irons and ironing boards (normally no-nos on cruise ships), and WiFi connectivity.

The hotel is also home to a spa and fitness center, a business center, and several dining venues, including a popular Sunday Brunch.

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach is located just outside Port Canaveral and is known for its sand and surf. It is also a popular pre-cruise hotel area due to the distance from the pier and the availability of amenities.

Besides the obvious beach day, visitors can stroll the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier that stretches 800 feet over the Atlantic Ocean. This boardwalk is lined with restaurants, bars, shops, and live music.

There is also the Ron Jon Surf Shop, which is the largest surf shop in the world with its own surf museum, and the Kelly Slater statue. Kelly Slater grew up in Cocoa Beach and learned to surf all along the Space Coast.

If that’s not enough, the 1,200 foot fishing pier that extends into the ocean is a great place to watch the cruise ships sail away. This is a popular location, so do expect a bit of a crowd around sail away time.

While rather bitter sweet, watching your cruise ship sail away with the next group of vacationers might be the perfect way to end your trip.

Fish Lips and Rusty’s are nearby restaurants and also popular spots to watch the ships sail out of port.

Exploration Tower

The Exploration Tower in Port Canaveral is an architectural landmark that offers several educational and interactive exhibits as well as observation decks with stunning views.

The Exploration Tower opened in November 2013 as part of the Canaveral Port Authority’s 60th anniversary celebration.

Top Things to Do in Port Canaveral

While visiting this popular attraction, guests can learn a bit of Central Florida’s history as well as the history of the port itself. The Air and Space Port on the 6th floor is an indoor observation deck that faces Kennedy Space Center.

The 7th floor is home to an outdoor observation deck that features panoramic views of Port Canaveral, the cruise ships, and surrounding beaches and wildlife.

There is even a state-of-the-art theater and a navigation simulator making a visit to the Exploration Tower fun for the whole family.

Currently (June 2022), only the gift shop and outdoor observation deck are open.

Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures

If you are looking for a little excitement during your visit to Port Canaveral, then you will want to check out Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures. Here, you can enjoy a day filled with plenty of zipping and climbing fun.

This aerial adventure park offers 7 different courses of varying levels of difficulty with a total of 49 different challenges. New in 2022, there is even the unique ZIPDROP free fall.

The unique ability to traverse through the course as an individual instead of as a group gives participants the flexibility to only complete the challenges with which they are comfortable. This makes it a great activity for all age and skill levels.

During a typical 2-hour climb session, participants usually complete 3 or 4 of the courses.

The park is located between the Banana River and Atlantic Ocean affording spectacular views from atop the lush canopy.

If you are taking a cruise from Port Canaveral, you should consider a pre-cruise or post-cruise visit to the most magical place on earth, Disney World. Walt Disney World is located in Orlando, Florida which is a little over an hour away from Port Canaveral.

Walt Disney World is home to the popular Magic Kingdom theme park and Epcot which hosts various festivals throughout the year like the Food and Wine Festival.

Additionally, Hollywood Studios is home to the new Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. Not to mention, there is also Animal Kingdom with its popular Avatar-themed land, two waterparks, and Disney Springs which is home to several dining and shopping experiences.

One of the central launching points for Alaska cruises, Seattle, WA is a vibrant and hip city. This contemporary metropolis is home to some of the Pacific Northwest’s most iconic sights and brands. Thus, cruisers will want to seriously consider extending their stay when departing Seattle on an Alaskan cruise. We have put together this guide to the Best Hotels Near the Seattle Cruise Port to help cruisers find the perfect pre-cruise or post-cruise hotel stay. No matter what type of accommodations you prefer, you can certainly find a hotel that is right for your next cruise from the Emerald City.

Method

To compare prices for hotels near the Seattle cruise port, we used prices quoted on each hotel’s website (where applicable). We tested the same night, for two adults, in a standard king bedroom. We picked a pre-cruise stay six months prior to our August sailing and checked prices directly though the hotel’s website.

Best Hotels Near the Seattle Cruise Port

Seattle Marriott Waterfront

Offering stunning views and proximity to the cruise ports, the Seattle Marriott Waterfront is the perfect choice for extending your stay in the city. The hotel’s location is within walking distance of landmarks including Pike Place and the Seattle Aquarium. Although, given the hotel’s over-sized rooms, we wouldn’t blame you if you decide to stay in and prepare for your Alaskan adventure. These approximately 300 sq feet rooms come fully furnished with a separate sitting area, work station, and flat screen television.

No matter what the temperature is outside, you can always relax in the hotel’s heated indoor/outdoor connected pool. Also, at the hotel’s main restaurant, Hook and Plow, travelers can partake in Pacific Northwest-inspired cuisine of locally sourced seafood and steaks. Don’t forget to sample a drink from the restaurant’s extensive list of craft beers and regional wines.

For our test night, a king room with a partial view came in at $409. This rate does not include internet or parking. Both will cost you extra. However, given the hotel’s 4.0 rating on TripAdvisor (with over 1800 reviews), the Seattle Marriott Waterfront is indeed worth the price tag. Previous guests boast about the hotel’s waterfront location and dining options. Cruisers will need to arrange for transportation to and from the airport, but if departing from Pier 66 can easily walk from the hotel which is a few blocks from this cruise port.

The Maxwell

If you are looking for a hotel that embodies the chic, urban lifestyle of Seattle, look no further than The Maxwell Hotel. This Stay Pineapple brand hotel is perfectly positioned around the corner from the Space Needle, at the base of Queen Anne Hill. Once you step foot in the door, you will realize that the Maxwell is a funky departure from the typical brand name hotels. From the bold, bright colors in the public areas, to the artfully designed hotel rooms, The Maxwell is a welcomed change from the pale palette you might find in other hotels.

Travelers can also take advantage of the hotel’s city shuttle to get to and from local attractions; however, this shuttle service can not be used to get to and from the airport or the cruise port.

For our test night, a king room clocked in at $359 a night. This is a steal considering all of the amenities included in the price. It is no wonder that the hotel has a 4.5 TripAdvisor rating with over 2,880 reviews. Past guests rave about the hotel’s quirky decor, friendly staff, and those little extra perks, like afternoon coffee and mini-cupcakes. Self-Parking is available for an additional cost, and cruisers will need to find transportation to and from the airport as well as the cruise port on departure day.

The Holiday Inn Express & Suites

Providing you with a great location and plenty of included amenities, the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Seattle Center will help you keep your travel budget in check. For our test night, the hotel’s King Room priced in at $243 with a non-refundable advance purchase rate. The price is an excellent value as it includes high-speed internet along with the brand’s complimentary hot breakfast. Additional onsite benefits included an indoor heated pool and a fitness center.

All rooms feature essentials such as a separate workstation, flat screen television, mini-fridge, and microwave, as well as a standard bathroom. A separate in-room sink and mirror will make getting ready in the morning more convenient for couples and families. With over 800 TripAdvisor reviews, the hotel has a solid 3.5 rating with many past guests praising the hotel’s location and reasonable prices.
