Are cruise ports in Mexico safe?

According to the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisories for Mexico at the time of writing, a ‘Do Not Travel’ advisory is in effect for the states where Manzanillo, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Acapulco, Topolobampo, and Mazatlán are located. Further, a ‘Reconsider Travel’ advisory is in effect for the states where Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, and Guaymas are located.

This is not to say that you need to completely cancel a cruise that visits these places or not even consider booking one that stops there. But if you do take a voyage to one of these ports, we recommend either staying within the developed port area or taking an organized excursion — not venturing out too far on your own.

If going ashore at all makes you uncomfortable, consider staying on the ship that day and enjoying it while it’s much less crowded! Remember that it’s in the best interest of the cruise lines to keep their passengers safe. If the situation gets too bad in a particular area, cruise lines have been known to cancel calls to that port entirely to keep their guests and crew safe.

As for all other ports in Mexico, it’s always good to exercise a healthy level of caution. Leave your expensive accessories and jewelry on the ship, pay attention to your surroundings, and try to stay in more highly trafficked/touristy areas. Like with most countries, there are safer areas than others in Mexico, and certainly some ports are more advisable to visit than others. How to Pick the Best Time to Go on a Cruise

Caribbean and Bahamas

There isn’t necessarily any “bad” time to cruise to the Caribbean or Bahamas, with the region welcoming cruise ships all year-round. However there are things to take into consideration, such as hurricane season which runs from June through November. Prices tend to be a bit cheaper from September through November, because of this and because kids are back in school.

Weather and crowd-wise, we recommend taking a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise in the January to mid-May time period, not counting school break weeks. The weather is more mild this time of year, it’s not hurricane season, and crowds shouldn’t be quite as heavy when school is in session.

Alaska

The Alaska cruise season generally runs from mid-April through September; cruise ships don’t sail in the region when it’s at its coldest throughout the winter. Of the cruising season, there isn’t a clear-cut answer when it comes to when is “best.”

To avoid crowds, choose a voyage during the shoulder season in April, May, or September. The least rainy month is May, while the warmest (and busiest) will be July and August. Certain times of the Alaska cruise season also increase your chances of seeing wildlife and/or the Norther Lights.

Mediterranean

Cruise ships sail in the Mediterranean all year long, but the primary season runs from April into early November. For more mild weather and less crowds than during the busy summer season, aim for a Mediterranean voyage in early May or September.

For the lowest crowds, look for one of the few voyages sailing in the winter or early spring. If you’re looking for warmth and sunbathing weather, June and July are good bets — avoid August if possible due to the hottest temperatures and highest crowd levels.

Mexican Riviera

There isn’t really a “bad” time to cruise to Mexico’s west coast, as the weather ranges from balmy to hot the majority of the year, and cruise ships sail there year-round.

For warm weather that isn’t too hot and the best chance at no rain, look to visit the Mexican Riviera during the winter and into early spring. As long as you avoid time periods where kids are off from school (Christmas break, winter break, spring break, etc.), you’ll also encounter fewer crowds during this timeframe.

Bermuda

The Bermuda cruise season generally runs from late March into early November. For mild weather, cheaper cruise fares, and fewer crowds, try to sail right at the beginning of the season in April or May. If you don’t mind spring break crowds, Good Friday and Easter is a fun time to visit Bermuda as there are lots of fun treats to eat and a Good Friday kite flying event at Horseshoe Bay Beach.

If enjoying the fanfare of a yacht racing event is more your speed, try to plan your cruise for the end of April at the beginning of the Bermuda International Invitational Race Week.

Northern Europe

Though cruises are available in northern Europe year-round, you’ll find the largest amount of voyages during the warmer months in spring, summer, and the beginning of fall. The best season to take a cruise in northern Europe weather-wise is in the summer from June through August. If you’re okay with cooler weather and want fewer crowds, opt for a sailing in September or October.

Canada/New England

The best time to visit Canada and New England is highly subjective based on what your goal is in going there. If you want the warmest, sunniest weather to explore quaint coastal towns and cities on the northern Atlantic seaboard, July and August are your best bets.

But many travelers head to this region specifically to see the dazzling fall foliage, in which case the best time to visit is October. September can be a good middle ground, because crowds will thin out (as school is back in session) but the weather will still be warm. There’s also a chance to see the start of the leaves changing towards the end of the month, though it varies from year-to-year and is never guaranteed.

Australia/New Zealand

Cruises sail Down Under year-round, and there is no cut-and-dry answer as to when the best season is to sail. Different parts of the region experience different weather in relation to the seasons, and it comes down to what’s most important to you.

For sunny skies and hot days in many parts of the continent where cruise ships sail, take a cruise during the austral summer. Since the seasons are flipped for the northern and southern hemispheres, that means during our winter season, from around December through March.

Waiting until at least February or March is a good idea for avoiding crowds, as Australian and New Zealander kids’ summer break generally runs from mid-December through January. For a voyage in northern Australia, consider March or later, as the cyclone season runs through February.

Hawaii

Like many other regions, there isn’t really a “bad” time to visit Hawaii. Certain times of year are preferable than others based on one factor, but another time of year will be more desirable based on another factor.

If you want more mild weather that isn’t in the rainy season, consider April to May or September to October. For the least chance of a rain shower (but the hottest temperatures), take a cruise to Hawaii in June, July, or August. For the best prices, look into voyages that sail in November and early December.

Are you looking to cruise without a passport? For U.S. citizens, passports are not required for all cruises. While we do recommend having a passport just in case, these are the top cruise destinations you can visit without one.

Can you cruise without a passport?

Yes, you can cruise without a passport (in certain situations). For U.S. citizens, a passport is not required for closed loop cruises. A closed loop cruise is a cruise that begins and ends in the same U.S. port.

For a closed loop cruise, a birth certificate and a government issued ID are the only forms of documentation required. The birth certificate must be the original or a certified copy with the raised seal. A photocopy will not be permitted.

Keep in mind that these requirements are for U.S. citizens only. For all other nationalities, a passport is generally required to cruise.

Of course, if you are traveling internationally, U.S. citizens will need a passport. A passport is required for all international flights and for any cruise that embarks or disembarks in a foreign country.

Further, passports are also required for cruises that begin and end in different locations (open loop cruises).

In fact, all major cruise lines offer sailings in this region, usually on multiple ships. Some are more family-friendly, some are more enrichment-focused, and some even offer off-the-beaten-path expedition experiences.

We have had the pleasure of exploring many stops in this region and all are equally as stunning. From the majestic Norwegian fjords, where towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls create a picture-perfect backdrop, to the medieval charm of the Baltic capitals, every port offers something unique. There’s also the dramatic landscapes of Iceland and the chance to spot polar bears on Arctic expeditions.

More and more cruise ships are visiting these regions every year— from mainstream lines like Celebrity, Princess, and Holland America, to luxury and expedition lines as well.

If you decide to sail the British Isles, you’ll visit charming ports in Great Britain and Ireland. In Belfast, you can visit the Giant’s Causeway, the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland. Or, live a day in the Game of Thrones by visiting popular filming locations including the Dark Hedges. Edinburgh, Inverness, and Glasgow, Scotland, as well as the Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands, are also popular stops.

In Ireland, you can visit Dublin and Cork. Norwegian Fjords itineraries typically stop in the popular city of Bergen, Norway, as well as some combination of other ports including Oslo, Stavanger, Geiranger, Alesund, and Flam. Some itineraries even cross into the Arctic with stops in Tromso. While others include stops in Reykjavik and Akureyri, Iceland. Here, you can visit the famous Blue Lagoon, stand between two tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park, and marvel at waterfalls, geothermal fields, and volcanic landscapes.

Baltic cruises typically feature stops in Helsinki, Finland; Tallinn, Estonia; Stockholm, Sweden; and Copenhagen, Denmark. With so much medieval architecture, historic churches, and one of a kind landmarks, there will be a photo opportunity around every corner.

Hawaii

We took our first cruise to Hawaii back in 2019 and loved it. The accessibility to the chain of islands makes Hawaii a top cruise destination.

Featuring some familiar favorites like Cagney’s Steakhouse and Teppanyaki, in addition to some unique Hawaiian themed venues, Pride of America serves as a great backdrop to your long days ashore.

This tradition in Mazatlan dates back to the mid 1900’s when the platform was originally constructed. These daring performers dive from a 50-foot platform into less than 6 feet of water. The cliff divers need to be precise to time their high-diving feats with the incoming waves as they plunge into the rocky surf below. There is no fee to watch the divers, but they do encourage tipping.

This dramatic arch at the very tip of the longest peninsula in the world was slowly carved out over time by the ocean currents. Nearby this landmark is a sea lion colony and Lover’s Beach.

Some of the more popular statues include the Subtle Rock Eater, In Search of Reason, the Boy on the Seahorse, and Los Arcos which marks the end of this stretch. Also, be sure to capture a panoramic photo in front of the Puerto Vallarta sign, but you will have to be quick!

Along the Malecon, there are also street performers, local artists, and the Dance of the Flyers. The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is also located right off the strip. It is worthy of a visit, even if only to admire the large crown on the top of the main tower that adorns the city skyline.

Attend Rhythms of the Night

Consistently rated as the top dinner show in Puerto Vallarta, Rhythms of the Night is not to be missed during your Mexican Riviera cruise. Rhythms of the Night – Savia is a Cirque du Soleil type performance featuring elaborate costumes, vibrant dance, and eloquent acrobatics. This visual storytelling portrays the persistence of the human spirit.

The excursion includes an approximately 45 minute boat ride over to Las Caletas, a secluded hideaway with tiki torches and candles to light the way. The ticket price also includes one welcome drink and a buffet dinner which is quite tasty. You can even choose to upgrade to an open bar for an additional cost. The actual show runs about 60 minutes, after which you will immediately board the boat for your return trip to the pier.

Take a Foodie Tour

If you are a foodie then you will love the tours offered by Vallarta Eats. You can also visit the animal sanctuary and marine ecosystem as well as enjoy the Los Horcones River for swimming, kayaking, and built-in waterslides.
 

Book an Animal Encounter

If you’ve ever wanted to get up close with a sea lion, your visit to Puerto Vallarta might be the perfect time. We did this excursion 10 years ago on our honeymoon and loved it. While waist-deep in water, you will have the opportunity to interact with these creatures while doing various activities such as kisses, flipper shakes, and funny faces. The sea lions are even trained to jump over your head as you swim up to them.

If you’d prefer, you can have a very similar experience with the beautiful Pacific bottlenose dolphins. Also in waist-deep water, you can take full advantage of your interaction to pet them or sneak a dolphin kiss. During the encounter, you will also learn ways to promote the well-being of these creatures. Some cruise lines also offer dolphin swim experiences.

Get Back to Nature with the Marietas Islands Eco Adventure

Marietas Islands are a small group of uninhabited islands located just off the coast of Mexico. They have been classified as a National Wildlife Preserve and are a popular tourist attraction due to the abundance of marine life. We did a whale watching tour on a larger boat and definitely regret it, as we were not able to get nearly as close to the whales as these smaller boats.

Most cruise lines will offer a variety of excursions like horseback riding coupled with other activities or a sunset horseback ride. You can set off by horse on a journey through the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains with panoramic views of the countryside and other natural wonders. This excursion makes for a romantic evening for couples or a fun-filled family adventure. No experience is necessary, but these tours will certainly create lasting memories.

Set Sail into the Sunset

Finally, if your cruise has a late day stop in Puerto Vallarta, you should consider booking a sunset sail excursion. Other nearby sites include Kohunlich and Dzibanche which also provide great insight into the Mayan civilization. One of the largest Mayan ruins ever excavated, Xcabal, will also be open exclusively to tourists in the near future.

Get Back to Nature

There is much natural beauty to explore while visiting Costa Maya. In fact, it is a snorkeler’s and diver’s paradise. Located on the Meso-American reef you can checkout the 2nd largest reef in the world! In addition, many excursions get you up close and personal with some of the most colorful coral formations and diverse sea life in the Caribbean. So, get those fins on and hop into the crystal-clear waters for some amazing sightseeing. Bacalar Lagoon, “Lake of Seven Colors”, is also an awe-inspiring natural reserve to do some glass-bottom kayaking or bird watching.

If you’d prefer to stay closer to your cruise ship, you can still interact with some sea life at Dolphin Discovery located right within the port. You can choose a dolphin swim adventure or a dolphin encounter that the kids are sure to love. Even if you don’t want to pay for an excursion, you might want to take a stroll by this area to catch the creatures performing some neat tricks.

Get Adventurous

Maya, Lost Mayan Kingdom is an adventure and waterpark. Luckily, it is located a short distance beyond the port in the quaint fishing village of Mahahual. You can get there by trolley from the pier or a short walk. This family friendly attraction offers plenty of wet and wild thrills for everyone. For the $99 admission fee, you will have unlimited access to a number of activities during your visit including zip line circuits, a zip coaster, waterslides, pools, a lazy river, and a kid’s only area. You can dance to the beat of the Mayan drums, enjoy the traditional papantla flying man ceremony, indulge in some Mexican cuisine, shop for handcrafted goods at the artisan market, or lounge near the saltwater pool with its very own swim up bar.

The downtown area of the quaint fishing village, Mahahual, is also only a short distance away from the port. Here, you can stroll the pedestrian only Malecon lined with beaches, hotels, and restaurants. Be sure to enjoy some seafood along with the views during your visit. This area is an approximately 30-minute walk or a short cab ride away. You can also take the port shuttle into town for $3.

Cozumel, an island just off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, is one of the most popular Caribbean cruise destinations. Offering plenty of daytime activities and nighttime fun, Cozumel has no shortage of things to do. Explore the Ancient Ruins

San Gervasio

With a rich Mayan history and culture, Cozumel and the nearby mainland of Mexico offer some of the best archaeological sites. San Gervasio is the largest Mayan site in Cozumel, though small compared to the sites on the mainland. San Gervasio was a religious site of worship for the god of fertility, Ix Chel. Every Mayan woman was expected to make the journey here at least once in her lifetime to make an offering. Today, several temples still stand that you can explore to gain some insight into the history and culture of this ancient civilization, including the Las Manitas structure with its mysterious four-fingered handprints.

Chichen Itza

If you want to explore some of the larger Mayan ruin sites, then you will have to venture to the mainland. Chichen Itza is a six square mile UNESCO world heritage site and a natural wonder of the world. It is home to several well-preserved structures that you can explore like the iconic Temple of Kulkulcan. During the tour, you will learn about Chichen Itza’s importance as a religious, ceremonial, and astronomical center in the Mayan culture.

Of note, there is extensive travel time involved from Cozumel, including a 45 minute ferry ride to the mainland followed by a 2+ hour bus ride to the site. Therefore, it is recommended that you only book this excursion through your cruise company. If you are willing to spend more cash, some companies offer transportation via a much shorter 50-minute airplane ride.

Tulum and Coba

Tulum and Coba, though not as famous as Chichen Itza, are also great options that are a bit closer to Cozumel. However, they still require a 45 minute ferry ride and an hour or more of drive time. As the only Mayan city built on a coast, Tulum offers amazing views and its own beach. The most prominent remaining structure at Tulum is the Castillo which is perched on a limestone cliff. Coba, located 30-45 minutes inland from Tulum, is not nearly as excavated or reconstructed. It is most famous for Nohuch Mul, the tallest pyramid on the Yucatan peninsula. Those daring enough may climb the steps to the top for panoramic vistas. The jury is still out on which site cruisers prefer, so you will have to decide for yourself.

Get Back to Nature

Chankanaab National Park

Located in Cozumel’s National Marine Park, Chankanaab is the perfect Cozumel shore excursion for groups of all ages. This park is located a short taxi ride from the cruise pier in Cozumel and offers plenty of activities in one location. You can choose to relax on the gorgeous beach, take a dip in the pool, or enjoy some one-of-a-kind snorkeling.

At Chankanaab, you also have several opportunities to explore the flora and fauna. You can enjoy the nature trail and botanical gardens, take in a sea lion show, visit the crocodile exhibit, or marvel at the fish in the saltwater lagoon. If that’s not enough, you can explore Mayan replicas, partake in a tequila tasting, or dine on Mexican cuisine in one of the onsite restaurants. While many activities are included in the standard admission price, additional experiences can be purchased as well. These include ziplines, Dolphin Discovery, glass bottom kayak rentals, and more.

Punta Sur Eco Park

Punta Sur is the largest ecological reserve in Cozumel. It is located a bit further from the cruise port but offers more great opportunities to explore nature. Punta Sur is another great snorkeling location (although you do have to swim a bit further out). It is also home to the most beautiful beach with hammocks in the shade. This area is the perfect spot for birdwatching and observing crocodiles in their natural habitat and the sea turtle nesting area. While at Punta Sur, be sure to also explore the El Caracol Mayan ruins, the Faro Celarain lighthouse, and the Navigation Museum. The Faro Celarain lighthouse offers the best view of island!

Marine Encounter

Like many of the Caribbean islands, Cozumel offers plenty of family friendly marine encounters. While some of these excursions can be a bit pricey, most cruise lines offer some type of swim with the dolphins experience. During your encounter, you will be able to interact with these creatures for one of a kind photo ops like a fin shake, a kiss, and a belly ride. While dolphin encounters are probably the most popular, you can also book experiences to interact with sea lions, manatees, stingrays, and even nurse sharks.

Fury Catamaran Snorkel

The Fury Catamaran snorkel tour is another popular adventure when visiting Cozumel on a cruise. There’s also plenty of other goods within easy walking distance of the piers including blankets, wall artwork, knick-knacks, jewelry, vanilla, and Mexican-made goods like pottery, leather items, and hammocks. Most stores accept both U.S. dollars and pesos, but you may pay a lower price if you pay in pesos. Credit cards are also widely accepted — especially Visas and Mastercards.

A Day at the Beach

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach is located about five miles from the cruise pier in Cozumel. This beach now offers an all-inclusive option. However, if you prefer to pay a la carte, you can still gain entrance for $10 per person with a $10 minimum food and drink purchase for use of the facilities for the day. There is WiFi available, full food and beverage service, water equipment available for rental, and a Fun Pass to utilize the water toys for $18.

Nachi Cocom

Another cruise favorite is Nachi Cocom, offering a more exclusive feel for only 130 guests. At this all-inclusive beach club, you have access to the ocean, a pool with swim up bar, plenty of food and drinks, hammocks, WiFi, and more. For a price of $69 and a short 15 minute taxi ride from the cruise pier, Nachi Cocom is the perfect way to spend a day in Cozumel. For an additional cost, there are also a limited number of other activities including massages, banana boat rides, and snorkeling.

Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club

Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club is also located only a short distance from the cruise pier. This club offers an all-inclusive beach pass for $68. For this price, you can enjoy free WiFi, all you can eat and drink from the buffet or menu, two pool bars, access to the beautiful beach, and kayaks. For an additional cost, you can also enjoy the aqua park, wave runners, parasailing, horseback riding, ATV tours, and more. Mr. Sancho’s certainly offers fun in the sun for the entire family.

Isla Pasion

Isla Pasion, a private island paradise located just north of Cozumel, offers another all-inclusive experience for Cozumel cruise port visitors. The resort features a beautiful beach, a Mexican buffet, open bar, hammocks, water sports, and more. There are several excursions offered to Isla Pasion including a catamaran ride, a Jeep ride through the jungle, a kayak through the mangroves, and a twister jet boat ride. Whatever your mode of transportation, you are sure to love this escape.

Playa Palancar

If you are looking for something a little more low-key and authentic than an all-you-can-eat-and-drink experience, then head to Playa Palancar. This beach has free access and is a bit less touristy. Get Adventurous

Jade Caverns

If you are looking for a little adventure while in Cozumel, Mexico, then you should take an ATV or X-Rail vehicle to the Jade Caverns. Get ready for a bumpy and dirty ride through the jungle on your way to Cozumel’s largest cenote. Here, you can admire the cave formations, discover the rare plant species, learn about the Mayan culture, and take a dip in the freshwater cenote, of course.

Secret River

If you want to explore more of the natural formations in Mexico, you can take an Amazing Secret River tour. This tour will guide you deep into an underground cave where you will hike and swim your way through the Rio Secreto while admiring its beauty and history. It is recommended that you book this excursion through your cruise line due to transportation to the mainland. Also, be aware that you will be required to wear a wetsuit.

Xplor Adventure Park

If you thirst for adventure is still not quenched, try visiting the Xplor Adventure Park. At Xplor, you have access to ziplining, amphibious vehicles, cave rafting, and swimming. When you are finished thrill-seeking for the day, you can enjoy a buffet lunch. Again, this park is located on the mainland of Mexico, so it is best to book the excursion through the cruise company to avoid missing the ship! Similar experiences can also be found at Xcaret Eco Park or Xel-Ha Paradise.

Horseback Ride

If you’d prefer something a bit more relaxed, then you should explore the Mayan Frontier on a one-of-a-kind horseback adventure. Set off on a journey through the jungle to view the flora and fauna, see original caves dating back 1,500 years, and learn a bit of Mayan history. No experience is necessary for this tour. You will be given all the instructions you need to ride and will be paired with a horse to meet your level of skill.
