For many people, planning a cruise vacation means choosing an itinerary that visits ports they want to explore. If you’re looking to sail in the Caribbean, there are a lot of itineraries — and therefore ports — to choose from. To help you decide what itinerary you might want to book, we’ve rounded up ten of the best Caribbean cruise destinations.

Best Caribbean Cruise Destinations: Cruiser Favorites

On Facebook, we asked Eat Sleep Cruise fans what they think are the best Caribbean cruise destinations. Here are six of the most popular answers!

Aruba

Aruba is a southern Caribbean island nation that’s part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, located just north of mainland Venezuela. It also makes up the “A” in the “ABC Islands” along with neighboring islands Bonaire and Curaçao; the three are also the only Dutch islands that are part of the Leeward Antilles chain of islands. Aruba, along with Bonaire and Curaçao, is a popular port on southern Caribbean cruise itineraries.

Best Things to do in Aruba on a Cruise for 2020

During a port day in Aruba, one of the most popular things to do is hit the beach. Eagle Beach is an excellent choice, as its soft white sand and clear blue waters have earned it a spot as one of the best beaches in the world. Palm Beach, Baby Beach, and Mangel Halto Beach are also great options.

Another popular activity is taking a catamaran snorkeling excursion — some even bring passengers out to snorkel and dive over a shipwreck. Other popular activities include De Palm Island water park, visiting the Butterfly Farm or Ostrich Farm, horseback riding, and taking a highlights of Aruba tour.

Bonaire

Bonaire is the “B” in the ABC Islands, located east of Curaçao just above Venezuela. Cruise ships dock in the capital city of Kralendijk, which serves as a starting point for a number of activities that cruisers can do on and around the island.

The main attraction in Bonaire is snorkeling and diving; the island is known to many as “a diver’s paradise.” You can head out on boat snorkel and dive tours, snorkel at the Bonaire National Marine Park, or snorkel in an underground cave.

But if you don’t want to take to the underwater world, other activities available include kayaking, taking an ATV tour, touring top sites on the island, visiting Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary, or going shopping at the Bonaire Arts and Crafts Cruise Market just off the cruise pier.

Best Things to Do in Bonaire on a Cruise in 2020

Curaçao

The “C” in the ABC Islands, Curaçao is located between Aruba and Bonaire in the southern Caribbean Sea. You may also recognize the name “Curaçao” as a blue liqueur, and you’d be right if you guess that it comes from this island. It’s a liqueur made from the dried peel of the bitter orange laraha, which grows in Curaçao. The liqueur is then dyed blue to give it its recognizable hue. The brand Senior & Co Liqueur claims to make the only “authentic” curaçao in the world, which is produced and bottled right on the island. Tours of the distillery are available and popular with cruise visitors.

In addition to blue curaçao, Curaçao has colorful Dutch colonial architecture and a storied heritage with Spanish and Jewish roots. So, historical and highlights tours are a great way for visitors to introduce themselves to the island. Other activities cruisers can partake in include land safari off-roading, kayaking, snorkeling, visiting Hato Caves, hanging out on the beach, and going jet-skiing.

Top Things to Do in Curacao on a Cruise in 2020

Barbados

Barbados is part of the British Commonwealth, and is the easternmost island in the Caribbean. The closest neighboring islands are St. Lucia and St. Vincent, which are both located to the west of Barbados. Not only is Barbados a common port call on southern Caribbean itineraries, but it also serves as a homeport for smaller ships from lines such as Windstar, Azamara, and Silversea.

Bridgetown, the country’s capital and the city where cruise ships dock, is popular for its history and British colonial architecture. In fact, Bridgetown is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cultural tours are a great way to learn about Barbados, and if you really want to dive into the history of the island, visit the Barbados Museum & Historical Society.

If you’re a rum connoisseur, consider touring distilleries such as the West Indies Rum Distillery or Mount Gay Distilleries. Other activities to do during a port call in Barbados include exploring Harrison’s Cave, spending the day at the beach, snorkeling, and wandering the grounds at Hunte’s botanical garden.

Passport Book vs. Card - Which is Better for a Cruise?

Tortola

Tortola is part of the British Virgin Islands, and is located slightly northeast of the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas and St. John. The country has stunning white sand beaches and vibrant blue water. Popular picks for a beach day include Smuggler’s Cove, Brewers Bay, Cane Garden Bay, and Long Bay Beach.

When stopping in Tortola on a cruise, many visitors take a ferry over to neighboring island Virgin Gorda. It’s known for the baths, a beautiful natural area filled with boulders and caves that forms a maze leading to secret pools. Likewise, some cruisers take a boat to another neighboring island, Jost Van Dyke to spend time swimming, snorkeling, and visiting the world-famous Soggy Dollar Bar.

Back on Tortola, popular activities include exploring J.R. O’Neal Botanical Gardens, going kayaking through mangroves, going hiking, and taking a tour of the island that includes stops at some of the most notable sites.

St. Thomas

St. Thomas, a U.S. Virgin Island, is one of the best Caribbean cruise destinations. It’s located in the eastern Caribbean between Puerto Rico and St. John. The port city, Charlotte Amalie, is the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is a very popular stop on eastern Caribbean cruise itineraries.

Upon disembarking your ship in St. Thomas, one of the first things you’ll encounter is the SkyRide cable car system that takes guests up to a great viewing point on the island, Paradise Point. This is a great activity as a first-time visitor to St. Thomas to get some great views of the destination. Plus, there are bars, restaurants, and shops at the top.

Another highlight of St. Thomas is its beaches, including Magens Bay and Lindquist Beach. Popular activities in St. Thomas include visiting Fort Christian, walking on the famous 99 Steps, zip lining, exploring the Pirates Treasure Museum, and taking a highlights tour of the island.

Best Caribbean Cruise Destinations: Popular Gems

In addition to the answers above provided by our readers, we wanted to include a few more popular cruise destinations that are beloved by cruisers of all ages.

Cozumel

Cozumel is an island located just off mainland Mexico in the Caribbean Sea, located just south of resort destination Cancun. It’s the single most popular cruise port on western Caribbean cruise itineraries, and for good reason. There’s a large variety of things to see and do in and around Cozumel, making it a great port call for every type of cruiser.

If you love to scuba dive or snorkel, this is an ideal destination for you: Cozumel is one of the best diving spots in the world. It’s also a great place to spend the day at the beach. You can get day passes at beach clubs like Mr. Sanchos or Paradise Beach.

A popular activity for cruisers during a stop in Cozumel is visiting Mayan ruins such as San Gervasio, Chichen Itza, or the Coba Mayan ruins which includes the tallest pyramid in Yucatan. For more adventurous outdoor experiences, you can take a Jeep tour, explore cenotes (sinkholes that you can swim in), or go four-wheeling.

St. Maarten

Sint Maarten is a Dutch country in the eastern Caribbean that shares an island with French country Saint Martin. It’s located south of Anguilla and just under 200 miles east of Puerto Rico.

St. Maarten is one of the most popular ports on eastern Caribbean itineraries, offering a variety of things to see and do for cruise visitors. One of the most popular and unique spots to visit is Maho Beach, which is located just across the street from the end of the runway at St. Maarten’s main airport, Princess Juliana International Airport. The planes almost appear within reach as they soar over the beach before landing on the runway, so it’s a popular spot for airplane spotters and photography enthusiasts.

Other popular activities to do in St. Maarten include hiking, zip lining through the jungle, taking a tour of Topper’s Rhum Distillery, and snorkeling. Island tours are also popular both on land via ATV or bus or at sea via boat.

St Maarten Island Tour Review

Half Moon Cay

Little San Salvador Island, also known as Half Moon Cay, is an island in the Bahamas owned by Carnival Corporation. Ships in the company’s fleet call there exclusively, including those from Holland America, Carnival Cruise Line, and occasionally Cunard. It’s a popular port stop on Bahamas and eastern Caribbean itineraries.

Most cruisers consider Half Moon Cay to be a beach day, hanging out and enjoying the soft powdery sand and crystal-clear blue waters. However, there are activities to do including shark and stingray encounters, snorkeling, glass-bottom boat tours, kayaking, paddleboarding, bicycling, nature walks, and horseback riding on the beach.

The island includes a barbecue lunch serving hot dogs, burgers, jerk chicken, ribs, and sides. A number of bars dot the guest area so you never go thirsty, and there’s also a Lobster Shack where you can grab a bite with a la carte pricing.

Everything You Need to Know About Half Moon Cay Bahamas

San Juan

San Juan is the capital and largest city of Puerto Rico, which is a U.S. territory located just east of the Dominican Republic and just west of St. Thomas. Not only is it one of the best Caribbean cruise destinations on eastern Caribbean routes, but it also serves as a homeport for ships operating southern Caribbean cruises.

Ships dock both in the city’s old town Viejo San Juan and at the Pan American Terminal just south of Old San Juan, but Old San Juan is the main attraction for most cruisers regardless of which dock they arrive at. Filled with Spanish-style buildings and lots of shops and restaurants, spending the day just exploring the cobblestone streets of the old town is a great way to enjoy the port. The old town is also home to forts Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo de San Cristóbal which are fun to explore.

Another popular activity to do during a port call in San Juan is visiting Casa Bacardi, which is the largest rum distillery in the world. Going hiking at El Yunque National Forest, visiting a museum, or taking a food-focused tour are also popular activities during a day in Puerto Rico.

How to Pick the Best Time to Go on a Cruise https://eatsleepcruise.com/best-time-to-go-on-a-cruise/ https://eatsleepcruise.com/best-time-to-go-on-a-cruise/#respond Mon, 12 Feb 2024 14:00:00 +0000 https://eatsleepcruise.com/?p=83759 We breakdown the best time to go on a cruise based on the region as well as several different factors like price, weather, and crowds.

The post How to Pick the Best Time to Go on a Cruise appeared first on EatSleepCruise.com.

]]>

When considering the best time to go on a cruise, there are multiple factors that have to be accounted for — namely the region you want to sail. The best time for a Caribbean cruise isn’t going to be the same as the best time for a northern Europe or Alaska voyage, for example. Other factors like cost, weather, and crowds might also be things you take into consideration.

To help you figure out when you should best aim for taking a cruise, we’re breaking down our recommendations by region.

How to Pick the Best Time to Go on a Cruise

Caribbean and Bahamas

There isn’t necessarily any “bad” time to cruise to the Caribbean or Bahamas, with the region welcoming cruise ships all year-round. However there are things to take into consideration, such as hurricane season which runs from June through November. Prices tend to be a bit cheaper from September through November, because of this and because kids are back in school.

Best Time to Go on a Cruise

Weather and crowd-wise, we recommend taking a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise in the January to mid-May time period, not counting school break weeks. The weather is more mild this time of year, it’s not hurricane season, and crowds shouldn’t be quite as heavy when school is in session.

Alaska

The Alaska cruise season generally runs from mid-April through September; cruise ships don’t sail in the region when it’s at its coldest throughout the winter. Of the cruising season, there isn’t a clear-cut answer when it comes to when is “best.”

To avoid crowds, choose a voyage during the shoulder season in April, May, or September. The least rainy month is May, while the warmest (and busiest) will be July and August. Certain times of the Alaska cruise season also increase your chances of seeing wildlife and/or the Norther Lights.

Mediterranean

Cruise ships sail in the Mediterranean all year long, but the primary season runs from April into early November. For more mild weather and less crowds than during the busy summer season, aim for a Mediterranean voyage in early May or September.

Best Time to Go on a Cruise

For the lowest crowds, look for one of the few voyages sailing in the winter or early spring. If you’re looking for warmth and sunbathing weather, June and July are good bets — avoid August if possible due to the hottest temperatures and highest crowd levels.

Mexican Riviera

There isn’t really a “bad” time to cruise to Mexico’s west coast, as the weather ranges from balmy to hot the majority of the year, and cruise ships sail there year-round.

For warm weather that isn’t too hot and the best chance at no rain, look to visit the Mexican Riviera during the winter and into early spring. As long as you avoid time periods where kids are off from school (Christmas break, winter break, spring break, etc.), you’ll also encounter fewer crowds during this timeframe.

Bermuda

The Bermuda cruise season generally runs from late March into early November. For mild weather, cheaper cruise fares, and fewer crowds, try to sail right at the beginning of the season in April or May. If you don’t mind spring break crowds, Good Friday and Easter is a fun time to visit Bermuda as there are lots of fun treats to eat and a Good Friday kite flying event at Horseshoe Bay Beach.

If enjoying the fanfare of a yacht racing event is more your speed, try to plan your cruise for the end of April at the beginning of the Bermuda International Invitational Race Week.

Best Time to Go on a Cruise

Northern Europe

Though cruises are available in northern Europe year-round, you’ll find the largest amount of voyages during the warmer months in spring, summer, and the beginning of fall. The best season to take a cruise in northern Europe weather-wise is in the summer from June through August. If you’re okay with cooler weather and want fewer crowds, opt for a sailing in September or October.

Canada/New England

The best time to visit Canada and New England is highly subjective based on what your goal is in going there. If you want the warmest, sunniest weather to explore quaint coastal towns and cities on the northern Atlantic seaboard, July and August are your best bets.

But many travelers head to this region specifically to see the dazzling fall foliage, in which case the best time to visit is October. September can be a good middle ground, because crowds will thin out (as school is back in session) but the weather will still be warm. There’s also a chance to see the start of the leaves changing towards the end of the month, though it varies from year-to-year and is never guaranteed.

Australia/New Zealand

Cruises sail Down Under year-round, and there is no cut-and-dry answer as to when the best season is to sail. Different parts of the region experience different weather in relation to the seasons, and it comes down to what’s most important to you.

For sunny skies and hot days in many parts of the continent where cruise ships sail, take a cruise during the austral summer. Since the seasons are flipped for the northern and southern hemispheres, that means during our winter season, from around December through March.

Legendary Voyages Highlight Holland America's 2024-2045 Australia and South Pacific Season

Waiting until at least February or March is a good idea for avoiding crowds, as Australian and New Zealander kids’ summer break generally runs from mid-December through January. For a voyage in northern Australia, consider March or later, as the cyclone season runs through February.

Hawaii

Like many other regions, there isn’t really a “bad” time to visit Hawaii. Certain times of year are preferable than others based on one factor, but another time of year will be more desirable based on another factor.

If you want more mild weather that isn’t in the rainy season, consider April to May or September to October. For the least chance of a rain shower (but the hottest temperatures), take a cruise to Hawaii in June, July, or August. For the best prices, look into voyages that sail in November and early December.

Two of the most popular cruise destinations in the world, the Caribbean and the Bahamas might seem similar enough at first glance. However, these neighboring collections of sunny islands off the southern tip of Florida stand apart in more ways than one.

If you’re trying to decide between a Caribbean vs Bahamas cruise, or one that visits both, read on to learn which cruise is the right choice for you.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas Cruise: What’s Better?

What’s the Difference Between the Bahamas and the Caribbean?

To start, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas is an island nation, with its own flag, currency, and prime minister. The Lucayan Archipelago consists of roughly 3,000 islands, islets, and cays in the Atlantic Ocean. The Bahamian capital of Nassau is one of the busiest ports of call in the world.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas Cruise What's Better

The Caribbean is a subregion of the Americas located in the Caribbean Sea. Consisting of more than a dozen countries, these island nations are typically divided into three categories: Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean.

Like the Bahamas, each island in the Caribbean has its own unique culture and characteristics. Popular ports of call in the Caribbean include St. Thomas, USVI; St. Maarten/St. Martin; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Notably, while Bermuda is at times on a Caribbean cruise itinerary, the British island territory is not part of the Caribbean. Bermuda itineraries are often listed separately by cruise lines.

Perks of a Bahamas Cruise

Departing from cruise ports like Miami or New York, Bahamas cruises are great for travelers seeking short cruise getaways. Able to reach the islands of the Bahamas within hours, cruise ships calling on the warm-weather ports of Nassau or Freeport is a no-brainer.

Cruise line Margaritaville at Sea (formerly Bahamas Paradise) has built an entire business on two-night sailings from West Palm Beach to Grand Bahama Island and back.

Beyond the officially recognized ports of the Bahamas are a slew of private islands and private ports. These destinations offer cruisers an exclusive resort-style experience ashore. Most cruise lines, including Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Norwegian, all offer their own private islands in the Bahamas. These include Half Moon Cay, Princess Cays, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and Great Stirrup Cay, among others. Virgin Voyages has a private beach club accessible only to cruisers on the island of Bimini.

How to Spend Two Days at Perfect Day CocoCay Bahamas

Often, the Bahamas is lumped into longer sailings that also call on the Caribbean. However, short cruises to the Bahamas are typically among some of the cheapest cruise vacations that you can book.

Logistically, a passport is not required if the voyage sails round trip from the U.S. (so to and from Fort Lauderdale, for example). Also making the Bahamas an easy destination to visit is that English is the official language and the U.S. dollar is widely accepted.

Perks of a Caribbean Cruise

The Caribbean is often referred to as a default cruise destination. But in fact, the islands of the Caribbean are vastly different. That is a good thing, since you can return to this tropical paradise again and again, experiencing something new each time.

On one end of the spectrum, you can visit the Caribbean without leaving the United States — yes, you read that right. Puerto Rico as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands are territories of the U.S. and therefore do not require a passport. That doesn’t mean that you won’t feel as if you haven’t left the country. The food, customs, and even language throughout ports like San Juan or St. Croix will definitely put you in vacation mode. If the sun, surf, and sand doesn’t do it, we offer three letters: r-u-m.

Caribbean vs. Bahamas Cruise What's Better

On the other end of the Caribbean spectrum are islands that remain part of foreign nations like France or the Netherlands. In one instance, a single island can be part of both, as is the case with St. Martin (French) and St. Maarten (Dutch) — separate but also the same. This gives its ports an intriguing blend of European influence alongside its local treasures.

There are also Caribbean island chains to explore like the British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke) and the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao). Many cruises give you the opportunity to visit various ports within these island chains over the course of a week or more.

The point we’re making about the Caribbean is that it’s a versatile cruise destination. It has way more depth and complexity than a nice beach to catch a tan. You can book a close-to-home Caribbean cruise from a homeport like Galveston, TX to Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico (considered Western Caribbean). Or you can venture further on a small ship that visits tucked-away harbors like Gustavia, St. Barts or St. John’s in Antigua and Barbuda.

Bahamas Cruise Itineraries

There are very few established cruise ports in The Bahamas. Therefore, you will likely visit a cruise line-owned private island as part of your Bahamas itinerary. This is typically a plus. Many of these destinations include amenities like the use of pools or sun loungers in the cruise fare. Another perk is that oftentimes, your cruise line beverage package extends to the bars on the cruise line’s private island.

Sample Bahamas cruise itineraries include:

 • Royal Caribbean’s 3-Night Bahamas & Perfect Day: Round trip from Miami, calling only on Perfect Day at CocoCay
 • Carnival’s 4-Night Bahamas Cruise: Round trip from Jacksonville, with calls in Freeport and Nassau
 • Norwegian’s 4-Night Bahamas Cruise: Round trip from Miami to Grand Bahama Island, Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau
 • MSC’s 7-Night The Bahamas and Florida: Round trip from Brooklyn to Ocean Cay and Nassau
 • Holland America’s 10-Day Western Caribbean Explorer: Round trip from Ft. Lauderdale, with calls on Half Moon Cay and Nassau (among others)
Caribbean vs. Bahamas Cruise What's Better

Caribbean Cruise Itineraries

The Caribbean is typically broken down into Western Caribbean (think: Mexico); Southern Caribbean (typically includes the ABC Islands); and Eastern Caribbean, which is often paired with The Bahamas. The selection of Caribbean ports is far vaster than Bahamas-focused voyages, but a few sample Caribbean cruise itineraries include:

 • Royal Caribbean’s 5-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise: Round trip from Miami, with calls in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Labadee, Haiti.
 • Carnival’s 5Night Western Caribbean Cruise: Round trip from New Orleans, with calls in Progreso and Cozumel, Mexico
 • Norwegian’s 7-Night Caribbean Cruise: Round trip from Port Canaveral, calling on Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Georgetown, Grand Cayman; Cozumel, Mexico; and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas
 • MSC’s 7-Night Southern Caribbean Cruise: Round trip from Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, calling on Castries, St. Lucia; Bridgetown, Barbados; Kingstown, St. Vincent & Grenadines; St. George, Grenada; and Fort-de-France, Martinique
 • Holland America’s 9-Night Southern Caribbean Seafarer: Round trip from Ft. Lauderdale, with calls on Willemstad, Curacao; Kralendijk, Bonaire; and Oranjestad, Aruba; with Half Moon Cay, Bahamas
Wonder of the Seas Inaugural Cruise Review

Final Verdict: Bahamas Cruises vs. Caribbean Cruises

The islands of either the Bahamas or the Caribbean will likely provide you with sunshine and good vibes, year-round. (Both are subject to Atlantic hurricane season from May through October. So, be aware of that prior to booking either destination.)

As with any cruise, it all depends on what you’re looking to get out of your vacation. If it’s a short getaway — maybe to celebrate a milestone with friends or family — the easiest option might be a Bahamas cruise, especially from ports in Florida. The Bahamas is also extremely family-friendly, as many of the private islands cater to kids as well as adults.

If you’re looking to go a bit farther or spend a bit longer, consider an itinerary in the Caribbean. A favorite among honeymooners, the Caribbean can be as well suited to relaxation and romance as it can be for partying. Depending on the homeport, short Caribbean cruises are still available in the Eastern and Western regions. For something a bit different, and typically better for couples, try a Southern Caribbean cruise.

wearing a mask on a cruise

Active and water-loving cruisers can’t go wrong with a stint in the Bahamas. Here, clear waters are prime for swimming and snorkeling. Those looking for more culture, should be impressed by the Mayan ruins of Mexico or the shipwreck museum of St. Thomas.

Wherever your ship brings you — and it might very well be to both destinations — you can’t go wrong. The Bahamas and the Caribbean are two of the top cruise destinations for a reason. Book that much-needed break at sea and find out for yourself!

Royal Caribbean’s Private Islands

Perfect Day at CocoCay

One of the Berry Islands, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas underwent an extensive renovation in 2019. The destination was transformed into the tropical paradise known today as Perfect Day at CocoCay. Since the upgrade, tendering is now a thing of the past. Guests can simply walk ashore to enjoy all the island has to offer.

Perfect Day at CocoCay (previously Little Stirrup Cay) is available only for the company’s cruise ships (and occasionally Celebrity Cruises). It is in close proximity to Nassau, making it an ideal stop on the cruise line’s Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries.

Many of the attractions on Perfect Day at CocoCay are complimentary. Like most cruise line private islands, there are plenty of soft sandy beaches with loungers and umbrellas for the ultimate day of relaxation.

There is also the Oasis Lagoon Pool, the Caribbean’s largest freshwater pool. This expansive oasis is open to guests of all ages and even features a DJ and swim-up bar. We’d say that sounds like a pretty Perfect Day at CocoCay!

This is truly a family destination. So, the kids will love the Splashaway Bay aquapark and the shipwrecked Captain Jill’s Galleon located near the pier. Both water features are free for the little ones to enjoy.

You won’t go hungry during your day ashore either. There are two island buffets, Chill Grill and Skipper’s Grill. Perhaps our favorite spot for lunch though is the Snack Shacks located around the island. These quick service stands serve up hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, mozzarella sticks, funnel cake, and more.

Another great feature of Perfect Day at CocoCay is that your ship’s WiFi packages and drink packages work on the island. So, be sure to grab a coco loco while enjoying your day of fun in the sun.

While there are many complimentary activities on the island, admission to signature attractions like the Thrill Waterpark (featuring a wave pool and the tallest slide in North America), Zipline, and Helium Balloon will cost you extra money. There are also up-charge shore excursions available.

Finally, the luxurious Coco Beach Club requires an additional fee for entrance too. A Coco Beach Club pass will grant you access to exclusive facilities. These include an oceanfront infinity pool, private beach, and a restaurant.

Labadee

Also exclusively for travelers on Royal Caribbean ships, Labadee is located on a peninsula on the northern coast of Haiti. Labadee was the cruise line’s original private destination.

Given its location, Labadee is more mountainous with lush vegetation than most of the other cruise line private islands. This affords for some unique experiences and shore excursions. Since Labadee is guarded and guests are not allowed to leave the property, all excursions must be booked directly with the cruise line.

If you are into adventure, then we highly suggest checking out the Dragon’s Breath or the Dragon’s Fire Flight Lines. The Dragon’s Breath Flight Line is the original zipline option where you sit in a harness. The Dragon’s Fire Flight Line is the newer option where you lay in the harness. Both launching platforms are located right next to each other up the mountainside and will have you racing over the ocean!

If this sounds like too much thrill for you, you may want to check out the Dragon’s Tail Coaster. This ride is similar to an alpine slide. It is a 680 foot drop with speeds that can reach 30 mph as you twist and turn your way down through the mountainside. During the ride, you will be treated to gorgeous island views and sights of your cruise ship in the distance.

Of course, if you’d prefer a day of relaxation, there’s plenty of beachfront space to do so. Across the five stretches of beach, you will find plenty of lounge chairs and the perfect vibe to fit your mood from the quieter Columbus Cove to the livelier Adrenaline Beach.

While ashore at Labadee, guests can enjoy an island BBQ and drinks from one of the many bars. Like Perfect Day at CocoCay, your Royal Caribbean drink package works here. So, be sure to grab the island’s signature Labadoozie.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Private Islands

Great Stirrup Cay

Also located in the Berry Islands, not too far from Perfect Day at CocoCay, is Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island. Great Stirrup Cay was the first cruise line private island when it was acquired back in the 1970’s, but it has come a long way since then.

Unfortunately, guests will need to tender ashore to Great Stirrup Cay. This means that weather conditions may impact your ability to visit the island.

Great Stirrup Cay offers an expansive coastline full of sandy beaches for you to spend your day relaxing on the island. With recent updates, there are now plenty of lounge chairs to accommodate NCL’s larger ships, newly planted palm trees for some added shade, and clamshells available for rent.

Book a Cruise to a Private Island After the Pandemic

Guests can also go snorkeling, rent kayaks or jet skis, brave the ziplines, or even book an excursion off the island to swim with the pigs.

Dining options are plentiful on GSC as well. The Jumbey Beach Grill is the main island buffet offering hot dogs, hamburgers, jerk chicken, fresh fruit, salad, a pizza station, and desserts. Other additions to Great Stirrup Cay include the Abaco Taco stand and the Tropic Like It’s Hot food truck. We particularly enjoy Abaco Taco.

To go along with your food, there are plenty of bar options, and the NCL drink packages work on the island too.

A newer addition to the island is the exclusive Silver Cove. This private retreat offers exclusive amenities for Haven guests, guests who book a villa, and guests who book treatments at the Mandara spa located in this area.

Silver Cove features a private restaurant, private Moet Bar, and private lagoon and beach area. Not to mention, the villas are the ultimate in luxury with private bathrooms, air conditioning, a television, and more.

Harvest Caye

Harvest Caye is Norwegian Cruise Line’s private destination located in southern Belize. This 75-acre retreat opened in 2016 in partnership with the country of Belize as a hub to explore this Caribbean destination. While located only about a mile from the mainland of Belize, the only way to visit this island is on an NCL cruise.

Cruise ships are able to dock at Harvest Caye. This allows guests access to walk directly off the ship on to the island.

Best Cruise Line Private Islands

The island features a lagoon pool, a 7-acre beach, restaurants and bars, and a variety of shore excursion options. Perhaps the most popular spot is the 15,000 square foot resort pool. It features plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas, a swim-up bar, and even a water feature. There is also a splash park for the little ones and a shopping center with local artisans, rum tastings, and the popular Moho Chocolates.

Additionally, Harvest Caye is home to a complimentary nature and conservation center with butterflies and birds and plenty of on-island up-charge experiences. Some of these options include the Flighthouse Zipline package, watersports, and parasailing. There are also excursions that take you to the mainland to visit Mayan ruins, snorkel the barrier reef, river tube, and more.

However, unlike other private islands, the food on Harvest Caye is NOT included. Your NCL drink package will NOT work on the island either. Still, there are plenty of food and drink options available for purchase.

Carnival’s Private Islands

While Carnival Cruise Line doesn’t have its own private island per se, the brand does share other Carnival Corp. private islands in the Bahamas. These include Holland America Line’s Half Moon Cay and Princess Cruises’ Princess Cays.

Half Moon Cay

Half Moon Cay is one of the 700 islands that make up the archipelago of The Bahamas. This small island is located approximately 100 miles southeast of Nassau and covers 2,400 acres. Though, only 50 acres has been developed into an exclusive beach resort. The rest of the area remains as a wildlife habitat.

Formerly known as Little San Salvador Island, the island’s name was changed to Half Moon Cay to reflect its crescent-shaped beach.

Unfortunately, the water around Half Moon Cay is quite shallow preventing docking. Thus, you will need to tender to head ashore, which takes about 20 minutes.

Holland America Line Rotterdam Caribbean Cruise Review

When you think of a cruise line private island, you probably envision stretches of beautifully manicured beaches. And Half Moon Cay is exactly that! Half Moon Beach is a stretch of approximately 2.5 miles of soft, sandy beachfront. However, there is no pool on Half Moon Cay.

Like most cruise line private islands, there is also a complimentary tropical island buffet and several bars on the island. However, your cruise line drink package will NOT work here.

If you are looking for a little activity while on Half Moon Cay, there are hiking and nature trails, bike tours, snorkeling, horseback riding, watersport rentals, and more.

Princess Cays

Princess Cays is Princess Cruises beautiful private island resort in the Bahamas, situated approximately 70 miles east of Nassau. This 40-acre retreat is located on the southern tip of Eleuthera Island and is often a stop on many of the line’s Caribbean cruises.

Unfortunately though, Princess Cays is a tender port, meaning guests will need to take small tender boats ashore. This means that weather may impact your ability to visit the island.

Like most cruise line private islands, Princes Cays is known for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and lush greenery. The island has a half-mile of pristine beaches that are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling.

Best Cruise Line Private Islands

The island also offers a range of water activities, such as kayaking and paddleboarding. Cruisers can rent equipment, take guided tours including stingray encounters and bike tours, or simply relax during their day at Princess Cays. If you want to upgrade your day ashore, there are bungalows available to rent as well. Cruise passengers are also able to leave Princess Cays to explore the rest of Eleuthera if they choose.

Of course, there are also beach bars and restaurants where visitors can enjoy a refreshing drink or some BBQ lunch. There’s also a Straw Market market with a collection of local vendors selling handmade souvenirs, jewelry, and other crafts.

If you are visiting Princess Cays on a Princess cruise ship, your cruise line drink package will work on the island. However, if you are visiting on a Carnival cruise ship, your drink package will not work on Princess Cays.

Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay is Disney Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas, formerly known as Gorda Cay. This exclusive port of call for DCL is located near Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. This 3-mile long island is just over 70 miles north of Nassau and covers 1,000 acres.

The good news is that Castaway Cay has a pier. Thus, cruisers can just walk ashore from the ship to experience stunning beaches alongside some Disney magic.

Family Beach is the largest of the Castaway Cay beaches. Here, you will find plenty of lounge chairs, colorful umbrellas, and hammocks scattered throughout the area. This is also where you will find many of the activities like watercraft rentals, snorkeling, and swimming.

Serenity Bay Beach is the adults only area on Disney’s Castaway Cay. This area is exclusively for guests 18+. While the adults are enjoying this slice of paradise, kids can enjoy supervised play in Scuttle’s Cove and teens can hang out at their own exclusive space, the Hideout.

Cruisers can also partake in sports and various other complimentary activities during their day ashore, including basketball, beach volleyball, natural trails, and even a 5K. Additionally, families will love the Pelican Plunge water platform with two slides, a drench bucket, and water cannons.

Of course, there’s also shopping and various shore excursions available. From bike rentals, to kayaks, to a Stingray Adventure and more, cruisers will have endless options to enjoy a day of fun in the sun.

After working up an appetite, guests can enjoy a complimentary BBQ lunch or grab a beverage at one of the bars scattered throughout the island.

MSC Cruises’ Ocean Cay Marine Reserve

MSC Cruises’ Ocean Cay Marine Reserve is the newest cruise line private island in the Bahamas. Ocean Cay is located about 20 miles from Bimini and can only be reached by booking an MSC cruise that calls on this private resort. While somewhat less developed than some of these other destinations, there is still plenty to do while visiting Ocean Cay.

This exclusive destination features 8 sandy beaches, teeming marine life, massage huts on the beach, authentic Bahamian cuisine, tropical cocktails, a Bahamian shopping village, and more.

Thankfully, there is a pier so guests can simply walk ashore to discover the pristine natural beauty of the area. There is also an area exclusively for Yacht Club guests.

While ashore, guests can rent watersports equipment, go snorkeling, take a guided tour, or even climb the iconic Lighthouse for panoramic views of the island. There’s even Junkanoo parades and an evening lighthouse show.

The Seakers Food Court is Ocean Cay’s BBQ buffet with items like hamburgers, salads, and other Caribbean offerings. There are a few food trucks scattered around the island as well for a quick bite to eat. Of course, cruise passengers can also grab a drink at one of the many bars around the resort. Perhaps the most eye-catching bar is the Lighthouse Bar.

The good news is that your drink package and WiFi will work ashore on Ocean Cay. However, it’s important to note that the coffee and ice cream at the Smiling Fish are not included.

In keeping with the cruise line’s eco-friendly mission, there are also plans to open a conservation center on the island including a coral nursery and educational facilities.

Virgin Voyages Beach Club at Bimini

The Beach Club at Bimini is Virgin Voyages private resort in the Bahamas. In partnership with Resorts World, Virgin Voyages has exclusive access to this beach club whenever they have a ship in port. On alternate days, cruise passengers from other line’s may be able to purchase Beach Club passes from Resorts World.

This exclusive 4.5 acre resort in the Bahamas overlooks the ocean and offers expansive lagoon-style pools. So, you can choose to spend your day on the beach or lounging by the pool. Either way, there are plenty of complimentary hammocks, loungers, and comfy furniture to relax, as well as private poolside and beach-side cabanas to rent. There’s also an exclusive area for RockStar Suite guests.

While you can technically walk to the Beach Club at Bimini, it is a bit of a hike. The best option is to hop onboard one of the trams that run between the cruise ship pier and the resort. These trams run continuously throughout the day, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long for one to arrive.

Like most cruise line private islands, the Beach Club offers complimentary food options and three bars including a swim-up bar in one of the lagoon pools. The BBQ buffet features a variety of Caribbean-inspired dishes, but don’t expect to find hamburgers or fries. Just like on the cruise ship, drinks will cost extra at the Beach Club. However, if you have a Bar Tab, it can be used on the resort.

The energy at the Club transforms throughout the day from relaxing and rejuvenating, to DJ-led pool parties, to beach bonfires to close out the evening. If you are looking for something other than a pool party scene, there are watersport rentals and excursions, or you can freely explore Bimini on your own.

Luckily, all of Virgin’s Caribbean itineraries visit the Beach Club at Bimini with extended time in port. Thus, you will have plenty of time to enjoy all there is to do.

Other Experiences for Cruise Ship Passengers

In addition to the above mentioned cruise line private islands, there are also other experiences built in conjunction with the cruise lines in various destinations. These purpose-built cruise ports include:

One of Royal Caribbean’s private islands is Labadee, Haiti. This exclusive resort is open only to those cruising on a Royal Caribbean (or Celebrity Cruises) ship. Among the thrilling attractions at this beach escape are ziplines. We recently visited the island shortly after its re-opening on the new Wonder of the Seas. Since it had been nearly 5 years since our last visit to Labadee, we decided to get reacquainted by booking a couple shore excursions, including the Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Fire Flight Line.

Well actually, we had booked the Dragon’s Breath Flight Line. However, due to wind conditions, they were shutting down this line and gave us the option to switch. While I was a bit apprehensive about ziplining headfirst over the water, we quickly agreed.

What is Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Fire Flight Line

On Royal Caribbean’s private oasis in Labadee, Haiti, guests have two options for ziplines. The Dragon’s Breath Flight Line is the original option where you sit in a harness. The Dragon’s Fire Flight Line is the newer option where you lay in the harness.

Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster in Labadee Review _ Dragon's Fire Flight Line

Both launching platforms are located right next to each other up the mountainside. The Dragon’s Breath zip line consists of 5 lines, whereas the Dragon’s Fire has only 2 lines. So, if you are flying as a group, you will need to pair off for this zipline experience.

The Dragon’s Fire Flight Line is approximately 200 feet longer than the Dragon’s Breath Flight Line; though, the launching platform is not as tall.

After gearing up and a safety briefing by trained guides, the Dragon’s Fire Flight Line will have you racing headfirst like a superhero down a 2,800 foot cable over the ocean of Labadee.

If this sounds like just the adrenaline rush that you need, then you will certainly want to book this unique Royal Caribbean excursion for your visit to Labadee.

This activity is rated as strenuous, so do consider your physical abilities before booking.

Booking Your Ride

Like most Royal Caribbean shore excursions, you can book the Dragon’s Fire Flight Line pre-cruise using the online Cruise Planner or once onboard the ship.

We are planners by nature, so we always book in advance. Plus, booking early usually secures a lower price for the excursion as you can time your purchase with a promotion. If your plans change, you can always cancel up to 48 hours before your port of call for a full refund.

The Dragon’s Fire Flight Line is available to book in 30 minute intervals throughout most of the day. Of course, the ziplines on Labadee are weather-dependent. They can be cancelled if conditions are not safe to fly.

Royal Caribbean's Dragon's Fire Flight Line in Labadee

The cost to ride Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Fire Flight Line does vary. Shore excursion prices are dynamic and based on the time of year and the cruise ship. For an upcoming cruise next month, the current cost is $109 per person for a single flight.

If you have your heart set on this attraction, you should monitor the cruise planner for deals. The cruise line often runs promotions with discounts on tours and excursions. If you book the tour and find it is cheaper, you can always cancel and rebook with the lower price.

Who Can Ride the Dragon’s Fire Flight Line

Since the Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Fire Flight Line is a strenuous activity, there are a number of requirements in order to ride this attraction.

First and foremost, this activity is not advisable for anyone with pre-existing medical conditions such as cardiac disease or those with neck or back injuries. Guests do need full use of both arms and legs and be able to walk up and down steps without assistance.

Royal Caribbean's Dragon's Fire Flight Line in Labadee

Also, children under 16 years of age but be accompanied by a guardian on the tour.

As with most activities of this nature, there are also height and weight restrictions. The minimum height requirement is 48 inches to ride. Further, guests must weigh at least 75 pounds and no more than 275 pounds. These weight requirements may be adjusted due to current weather conditions.

Finally, all guests will need to sign a waiver prior to participation in the Dragon’s Fire Flight Line.

Preparing for the Dragon’s Fire Flight Line

On the day of your visit to Labadee, you will need to arrive prepared for this tour. Be sure to follow the instructions on the ticket for arrival time. This is usually around 30 minutes prior to your actual flight time. Further, be sure to bring closed-toe shoes onto the island with you, as you will need them for this activity.

If not everyone in your travel party is participating, you will want to leave all loose articles and belongings with them. There are lockers near the check-in station, but they are not free. The rules state that cameras can be worn but can not be held during the flight.

Upon arrival, all guests will need to sign a waiver for this activity. You will also need to weigh in and receive a wristband so that staff can easily identify your weight.

Royal Caribbean's Dragon's Fire Flight Line in Labadee

For the Dragon’s Breath Flight Line, you would now suit up and head to a small practice zipline. However, there is no practice course for the Dragon’s Fire Flight Line.

Instead, you will ride in an open-air safari bus outside the confines of the property directly to the launching platform in the mountainside. This drive takes less than 5 minutes.

Experiencing the Zip Line

Once at the flight area, participants will gear up with a helmet and a mat-like harness. There is also an instructional session where the guides review the entire process, two flight positions, the landing position, and other safety aspects.

The guides will inform you of your flight position based on the combination of your weight and the current weather conditions. The two positions are either the rocket position (arms by side) or the superman position (arms out to side).

The landing position is the same for everyone. It is extremely important to follow commands and ensure to tuck your chin and cross your arms prior to landing to avoid injury.

Guests are then led up the stairs to the launching platform two at a time. This is the scariest part of the experience. On the launching platform, overlooking Labadee and the water below, you will need to complete a trust fall of sorts. While your main cables are obviously already secured in place, you will need to go from a standing position to a prone position so the staff can secure the last cable and position your feet safely for the flight.

Once locked and loaded, the countdown begins. 3, 2, 1, and you’re off!

The actual flight time is exhilarating, but it does go by quickly. Depending on the conditions, the flight is approximately 45-50 seconds long.

When comparted to the Dragon’s Breath Flight Line where you are seated upright, you do miss out on some of the panoramic views. Though, how many times can you say that you ziplined headfirst over Caribbean waters?

Upon landing, the staff will assist you in unloading from the harness with the use of a ladder.

Our experience did take a bit longer because we were already harnessed up for the Dragon’s Breath before we had to switch to the Dragon’s Fire Flight Line. However, total time should normally be less than 1.5 hours, leaving plenty of time to explore everything else Labadee has to offer.

BOOK NOW: Score Big on Royal Caribbean Cruises!

Is Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Fire Flight Line on Labadee Worth it?

If you are looking for some excitement during your time at Labadee, this excursion might be the perfect option. Yes, the ride itself is short and a bit pricey. Still, it was a lot of fun.

The activity was organized, and it was a nice break from the beach and the sun. We will definitely brave the Dragon’s Fire Flight Line again on another visit to Labadee. Given it has been years since we last took flight on the Dragon’s Breath zip line, we are already planning a return trip during our next visit.

If this is too much thrill for you, you may want to check out the Dragon’s Tail Coaster.

Everything You Need to Know About Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster on Labadee

When Can You Ride the Coaster

Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster is located on the private island of Labadee, Haiti. Those taking a Caribbean cruise to this destination will have the opportunity to experience this ride.

The coaster is open most of the day during your stop at this private island. The first ride tends to start about an hour after your ship is due into the port. The final ride is usually a couple hours before the ship is set to depart.

Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster in Labadee Review

Like any outdoor attraction, this coaster is weather dependent. If there is rain or high winds, the coaster may not operate.

Booking Your Ride

Like many shore excursions on Royal Caribbean’s website, you can book the Dragon’s Tail Coaster pre-cruise using the online Cruise Planner or once onboard the ship. If you are not sure about this attraction, you can wait until you arrive at Labadee and inquire if there are any slots left for the day.

We are planners by nature, so we always book in advance. Plus, booking early usually secures a lower price for the excursion as you can time your purchase with a promotion. If your plans change, you can always cancel up to 48 hours before your port of call for a full refund .

The Cost for the Dragon’s Tail Coaster

The cost to ride Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster does vary. Shore excursion prices are dynamic and based on the time of year and the cruise ship. For one of our upcoming cruises, the price for a single ride is $26 per person. Cruisers can also opt for a full day pass which is currently priced at $35.75. The all-day pass lets cruisers ride the attraction an unlimited amount of times, depending on capacity.

Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster in Labadee Review

However, if you purchase a single ride, you will need to pick a time slot which usually runs in 30-minute intervals.

If you have your heart set on this attraction, you should monitor the cruise planner for deals. The cruise line often runs promotions with discounts on tours and excursions. If you book the tour and find it is cheaper, you can always cancel and rebook with the lower price.

Who Can Ride the Coaster

The Dragon’s Tail Coaster vehicles hold up to two individuals; although, there is a weight maximum of a combined 360 lbs. If you are riding double occupancy, only one person needs to purchase a ticket.

Children aged 5 to 11 must ride with a parent. Further, these junior cruisers must be at least 38 inches tall to enjoy the coaster. Those who are 12 years or older, can ride by themselves but must be at least 54 inches tall to ride solo.

These carts are rather tight, so even if you meet the weight requirements, two adults would probably be more comfortable riding separately.

The cruise line rates this attraction as “strenuous”. So, it is advised that those with a number of medical conditions not participate in the ride. Of course, you should consider your own sensitivity for thrill experiences and current health before opting to participate in the Dragon’s Tail Coaster on Labadee.

Drivers must have full use of both arms in order to operate the brakes. Further, all guests must sign a waiver before participating.

In our experience, the attraction is not physically demanding, like say a hike or rock climbing. The vehicle and track do most of the work for you. Still, the ride is fast, with tight turns and inclines, so it can be intense.

Getting to the Dragon’s Tail Coaster

The Dragon’s Tail Coaster is located on the northeast side of the island. The ride and adjacent sign-up desk are past Adrenaline Beach. To get there, you can walk from Dragon’s Plaza using the leisurely path. The path is mostly paved, and it takes no more than 15 minutes.

Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster in Labadee Review

Or, you can take the tram to the Town Square tram station. From there, it is a short walk past the Artisan Showcase and Café Labadee. Either way, the Coaster is easily accessible and not hard to find. It is tucked away in the mountainside, but there is plenty of signage.

Preparing for the Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster

With a confirmed reservation, you have to check-in and sign a waiver at the base of the coaster with the staff. Once you have reviewed and signed all of the documentation, it is on to the loading platform.

Here, you will watch a brief introductory and safety video. This provides an overview of how to control the carts, as well as the rules regarding spacing and the various signals used. There is also a communal cubby for guests to store any belongings during the ride.

Cruisers do control the speed of each cart. So, you can determine how fast (or slow) the vehicle goes by using the hand brakes. Pushing all the way down will have you going at the maximum speed. To slow down, you can pull up for the brakes.

Experiencing Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster

The Dragon’s Tail Coaster on Labadee is a 680 foot drop with speeds that can reach 30 mph. Of course, the speed depends on your controls and the weight of the cart.

The setup is similar to an alpine slide. Although, in true coaster fashion, there is a slow climb up the hill. This classic chain lift lets the anticipation build as you prepare for the drop.

Once you are at the top, it’s gravity’s turn to take over. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this attraction as we have been on some of the tallest and fastest roller coasters in the United States.

Surprisingly, the cart picked up more speed than I thought down the track, twisting and turning through the mountainside. In fact, there were a few tight curves that even I pressed up slightly on the brakes.

As you are coming around some of the embankments, you will be treated to gorgeous island views and sights of your cruise ship in the distance. While the views were beautiful, we were all about the speed.

Royal Caribbean’s website indicates the total ride time is 3-5 minutes long. This is accurate as my ride down the Dragon’s Tail Coaster lasted just about 4.5 minutes. The ride was briefly delayed at the end, as I caught up to the group in front who were going rather slow.

Unfortunately, the speed of those in front of you does impact your ride. The Princess was in front of me, so she caught up to this group much quicker than I did. This impacted how fast she could go for about half of her ride.

Safety Protocols

Of course, safety is always a top priority. From our recent experience, we can report the carts were well maintained and included a seat belt.

Plus, cruisers are in control of the carts. So, if at any time you felt the ride was going too fast or felt unsafe, you could always slow down. Built into the ride, there are also traffic lights which provide signs to slow down or stop. This is an added layer of protection to ensure that you don’t crash into anyone in front of you on the track.

Is Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster on Labadee Worth it?

If you are looking for some excitement during your time at Labadee, this excursion might be the perfect option. Yes, the ride is short. Although, when compared to the costs of the nearby zip lines, the coaster is very reasonably priced and still offers plenty of thrills!

Royal Caribbean’s Dragon’s Tail Coaster in Labadee Review

Plus, if you are looking to ride the coaster multiple times, the full day pass is even a better value.

The activity was organized, and it was a nice break from the beach and the sun. From checking in, to completing the safety briefing, to experiencing the ride took about 30 minutes. So, there is certainly still plenty of time to enjoy everything else the island has to offer.

We will definitely brave the Dragon’s Tail Coaster again on another visit to Labadee, Haiti during a future Royal Caribbean cruise.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic (2024)

What is Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic?

Amber Cove Cruise Center is one of the Dominican Republic’s newest cruise ports; it opened in 2015. This port of call is located on the Bay of Maimon along the Dominican Republic’s northern “Amber Coast.” It is located just northwest of Puerto Plata.

This two-berth cruise terminal is named after the amber stone that is mined in the area. It represents one of the largest cruise industry investments ever made in the Dominican Republic. This 25-acre cruise port was an $85 million investment by Carnival Corporation.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Despite being quite new, Amber Cove maintains a historic vibe as the nearby Puerto Plata actually dates back to the late 1400’s. Thus, Amber Cove serves as your gateway to historic sites, beautiful beaches, and a plethora of adventurous activities while visiting the Dominican Republic.

Prior to the development of Amber Cove, this area of the Dominican Republic hadn’t seen a cruise ship since the 1980’s. Today, there is still less cruise traffic, allowing you to explore with less crowds.

Amber Cove is a private cruise line destination. So the only way to visit this port of call is on a cruise, much like Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay, NCL’s Great Stirrup Cay, or Half Moon Cay.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic was built by Carnival Corporation, and therefore is primarily used by cruise brands within the Carnival Corp. fleet. Currently, ships from Holland America, Carnival, Princess, Costa, and Cunard have Amber Cove on their itinerary schedules.

Other non-Carnival Corp. cruise lines do occasionally call at Amber Cove as well though, such as Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Once you arrive at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, it is a short walk down the pier to the main port area. For those who can’t walk long distances, there are complimentary pedicabs to drive you down the pier.

There is plenty to do in the port area. However, there is also a transportation hub off the main port area for taxis and buses allowing visitors easy access to other attractions in Puerto Plata.

What’s Included at Amber Cove, Dominican Republic?

When visiting Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic on a cruise, guests have the option to spend the day in the port or book an excursion to explore more of this historic area.

While Amber Cove does not have a beach, there is plenty to do within the port without spending any money. The biggest draw of Amber Cove is the large resort-style pool.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

This pool has a swim-up bar and plenty of lounge chairs to relax and soak up the sun. The beach loungers are complimentary, but you will need to bring towels from the ship. When we visited it was only our ship in port, so this area was pretty quiet. Still, we suggest getting off the ship sooner rather than later to secure the best spots.

Located near the pool are also two waterslides and a splash pad for kids. Again, these areas are free for the little ones to enjoy at no added cost. There is also a basketball and volleyball court, as well as a giant chess game.

If you want to escape the crowds near the pool, there is a small secluded section of hammocks near the bay.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

There is also a large shopping area to browse. Near the end of the shopping center, you won’t want to miss the photo op with the Amber Cove sign. This sign is strategically located for the perfect photo with your cruise ship in the background.

Unfortunately, food and drinks are NOT included at Amber Cove Dominican Republic. While there are restaurants and bars, they will cost you extra money. Also, your cruise ship drink package will not work at the bars in this port area.

Further, your ship WiFi package will not work here either. If you have international cell phone coverage, local rates will apply. Or, you can purchase an all-day Amber Cove WiFi pass for just $8.

Food and Drinks at Amber Cove

While the food and drinks will cost extra at Amber Cove Dominican Republic, you might still want to sample the local flavor.

Amber Cove has two eating areas, one near the pool and the other in the shopping area. Both Coco Caña locations offer food and drinks to purchase at a la carte prices. The location near the pool also has a swim-up bar.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Additionally, the Sky Bar is worth a visit while in Amber Cove Dominican Republic. Cruisers can reach this hilltop bar via a series of dirt steps or an inclined walkway near the waterslides. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with beautiful panoramic views of Amber Cove and perhaps a drink or two.

Things to Do at Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

While in Amber Cove, the most popular activity is probably the Aqua Zone. You can easily spend the entire day just lounging by this complimentary pool area, while the kids enjoy the waterslides and splash pad.

You can rent umbrellas for $20, lockers for $6, or book a VIP package which entitles you to a reserved area near the pool with additional amenities.

If you are looking for a bit of adventure, Amber Cove Dominican Republic has a zipline that soars over the pool area. Guests can purchase an all-day pass for just $20. There is also a water sports rental area. Here, guests can rent items like paddleboards, hydrobikes, kayaks, pedal boats, or solar catamarans for either a half hour or an hour at varying prices from $20 to $60.

Everything You Need to Know About Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Of course, it wouldn’t be a visit to the Caribbean without doing a little shopping. The marketplace right at the port offers more than just your typical shops. You can purchase rum, coffee, chocolate, amber, and various other items.

If you want to upgrade your day at Amber Cove, you can rent a cabana. You can choose between a Hillside Cabana, Poolside Cabana, Ocean Cabana, or Grand Cabana.

Most cabana rentals include bottles of water and soda, a basket of local goodies, and an all-day pass for eight guests for the zip-line, as well as some specific amenities based on which cabana you choose. Pricing for these cabanas vary from $500+ to $2,000+.

Shore Excursions at Amber Cove

If you’d prefer to venture beyond Amber Cove, there are plenty of shore excursions that depart from this port area. These excursions vary from beach breaks and historical tours to adventure activities.

Puerto Plata’s Atlantic coastline has more than 60 miles of beaches. Thus, spending the day at the beach is a popular way to enjoy a call at Amber Cove. The cruise lines offer the All-Inclusive Coconut Cove and Playa Bachata beach breaks as well as other beach stops included in Puerto Plata sightseeing tours.

Puerto Plata’s Malecon is known for its shopping, restaurants, and bars where you can enjoy a bit of Dominican culture. At the very end of the seafront, you will see the massive stone walls of the Fortress of San Felipe, a historic military fortress converted into a museum.

Fortress of San Felipe

You can also partake in chocolate factory tours, visit the Amber Museum, tour the Brugal Rum factory or a cigar factory, and interact with local coffee farmers.

Monkeyland is another popular attraction near Amber Cove for families. Here, you can interact with the friendly squirrel monkeys.

You can also enjoy more animal encounters at the popular Ocean World Adventure Park. Here, you can watch dolphin, sea lion, shark, and tropical bird shows; go snorkeling; swim in the Pirate’s Pool; or just relax at the Dolphin Beach Lagoon.

Damajagua Falls is just a 30 minute ride south of Amber Cove and is the premier attraction of Puerto Plata. Here, you can climb, slide, and jump from a number of these 27 waterfalls for the ultimate day of adventure.

If you are looking for more adventure, your cruise line will also offer horseback riding, ziplining, dune buggy rides, and catamaran sails during your visit to Amber Cove.

You might be surprised as to how many regions of the world have tropical climates, which are defined as high year-round temperatures and wet/dry seasons. The tropics are officially located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The tropics include the Equator and parts of North America, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Thus, if you are looking for the perfect beach escape, look no further than one of our top tropical cruise destinations.

Top Tropical Cruise Destinations

Caribbean

The Caribbean is one of the most popular tropical cruise vacations. Nearly 35% of all cruises sail the Caribbean.

The Caribbean offers that picturesque tropical vacation of which you are dreaming. Sprawling beaches, turquoise waters, rainforests, and umbrella drinks all await you. Which islands you visit does vary slightly by the ship and cruise line.

However, all Caribbean islands offer a variety of popular activities like beach breaks, island tours, snorkeling, and historic and cultural tours. There will also be adventure activities like zip lining and off-road tours at most ports of call.

Itineraries in this region are generally divided into Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean routes. These itineraries can range from 4 or 5 days to traditional 7-day cruises.

Longer itineraries also exist including 9 or 11 days to even 14 days or more!

Some of the more common stops include Jamaica; St. Thomas; St. Maarten; Tortola, BVI; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Aruba; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; and more.

Mexico

Another region that is a top tropical cruise destination is Mexico. While Western Caribbean itineraries often include visits to Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico, there are many other great locales in the Mexican Riviera.

More cruise lines are beginning to shift some of their latest and greatest ships to the West Coast to offer cruises in this region.

Exclusive Savings on Cruises to Mexico

Ports in the Mexican Riviera, like Cabo San LucasPuerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Acapulco offer amazing beaches, immersive cultural and historical experiences, and a festive atmosphere day and night.

Plus, there are exclusive offerings like whale watching, cultural shows like Rhythms of the Night, and some unique landscapes that you can’t find in the Caribbean.

While there are less ships sailing this region than the Caribbean, you will still have options from popular brands like Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises.

Hawaii

The accessibility to the Hawaiian islands makes it another popular tropical cruise vacation. Most Hawaiian cruises depart from the island of Oahu, visiting the Big Island and Maui. Some cruises also visit the island of Kauai.

With attractions like Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, and a selection of luaus, Oahu definitely requires a couple days to explore either pre-cruise or post cruise.

The Big Island of Hawaii is very diverse. Its landscape ranges from volcanoes, mountainous terrain, beaches, rainforests, and everything in between.

A Hawaiian cruise itinerary is likely to include a stop at Hilo which is on the east side of the island as well as Kailua-Kona on the west coast of the island. One of our favorite excursions was a helicopter ride over the island to marvel at the volcanoes, lush landscapes, and rugged coastline.

Further, an over-night visit to the island of Maui is common on a Hawaiian cruise. Some of Maui’s most popular attractions include the Road to Hana and Haleakala Crater.

Several cruise lines have ships making stops in the region. As the only ship sailing in Hawaii year-round, NCL’s Pride of America is an easy choice. Bahamas

Another top tropical cruise vacation, especially for cruises of shorter duration, is the Bahamas. Normally, these cruises depart from the East Coast of the United States. In fact, a majority of these cruises leave from Florida.

While you are probably familiar with Nassau, Bahamas, this region is also home to many cruise line private destinations.

These private islands offer exclusive access for passengers sailing with the cruise line. These islands usually offer included food, beach access with loungers, and other amenities. These destinations have come a long way over the years.

MSC Cruises just debuted its brand new Bahamian paradise at Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, and Virgin Voyages is set to debut its brand new Beach Club at Bimini.

Norwegian Cruise Line has recently updated its private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay, as well. Then, who could forget Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay, featuring the tallest waterslide in North America, a large lagoon style pool, and an exclusive beach club.

Besides luxurious beach days, these South Pacific islands offer other popular activities as well. Cruisers can explore the area on volcano hikes, snorkel excursions, 4×4 adventures, and so much more.

Of course, you will also want to experience the history, culture, and cuisine while visiting this tropical locale.

Panama Canal cruises are usually one-way trips from East Coast to West Coast (or vice versa), though they can be round-trip sailings as well. Are you looking to cruise without a passport? For U.S. citizens, passports are not required for all cruises. While we do recommend having a passport just in case, these are the top cruise destinations you can visit without one.

Can you cruise without a passport?

Yes, you can cruise without a passport (in certain situations). For U.S. citizens, a passport is not required for closed loop cruises. A closed loop cruise is a cruise that begins and ends in the same U.S. port.

For a closed loop cruise, a birth certificate and a government issued ID are the only forms of documentation required. The birth certificate must be the original or a certified copy with the raised seal. A photocopy will not be permitted.

Keep in mind that these requirements are for U.S. citizens only. For all other nationalities, a passport is generally required to cruise.

things you should never do on a cruise

Of course, if you are traveling internationally, U.S. citizens will need a passport. A passport is required for all international flights and for any cruise that embarks or disembarks in a foreign country.

Further, passports are also required for cruises that begin and end in different locations (open loop cruises).

The Caribbean offers that picturesque tropical vacation of which you are dreaming. With itineraries generally divided into Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean routes, you will have plenty of choices when it comes to a Caribbean cruise.

There will also be adventure activities like zip lining and off-road tours at most ports of call.

Again, do keep in mind if you decide to cruise without a passport, you might not be able to get off the ship in certain locations. For example, the Caribbean island of Martinique requires that all cruise passengers have a valid passport to go ashore.

You can cruise to the Bahamas without a passport

The Bahamas is another popular cruise destination that you can visit without a passport. Normally, these cruises depart from the East Coast of the United States, primarily from Florida homeports. You can cruise without a passport from Seattle to Alaska

For many, the seasonal cruise destination of Alaska is high on their bucket lists. An Alaskan cruise even lures those who wouldn’t necessarily consider a cruise. These vacations are more about the destination than the cruise ship. Cruises to Alaska appeal to nature lovers, photographers, and explorers. On an Alaskan cruise, you can set off in search of glacial vistas, wildlife encounters, and some of the freshest seafood.

Most major cruise lines offer sailings in this region. The most popular U.S. embarkation port for Alaska cruises is Seattle. Though, there are also roundtrip cruises from Vancouver and one-way itineraries.

These itineraries usually include port stops in JuneauKetchikan, and Skagway, Alaska. These itineraries can visit Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia as well. These ports of call offer a variety of shore excursion options from helicopter rides over glaciers, to whale watching, bear sightings, salmon bakes, and historic gold route tours.

You can cruise without a passport to Bermuda

If you are looking to cruise without a passport, Bermuda is another popular choice. This British territory is home to some of the friendliest people and arguably the best beaches and natural landscapes in the Atlantic.

Given that the island is further north than many of the other popular tropical destinations, the weather is a bit more seasonal here. Therefore, cruises to Bermuda generally occur from April to October. Still, that is almost half of the year to find some vacation time to enjoy all that Bermuda has to offer.

Best Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise

Many of the major cruise lines usually have ships that visit Bermuda. Most even offer two or three day stays to enjoy this beautiful location. You can use this time to explore Kings Wharf and other popular stops like St. George’s and Hamilton.

A Bermuda cruise might be the perfect choice for those living in the Northeastern United States as there will be no flying involved. Most Bermuda cruises leave from New York or Cape Liberty, New Jersey. A few also depart from Boston, MA, Baltimore, MD, and occasionally some southern ports like Florida.

You can go on a Mexican Riviera cruise without a passport

For those living on the West Coast, the Mexican Riviera might be the perfect destination to which to cruise without a passport.

Ports in the Mexican Riviera, like Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, offer amazing beaches, immersive cultural and historical experiences, and a festive atmosphere day and night. The Mexican Riviera is much like the Caribbean for West Coasters.

Do you need a passport to cruise Canada and New England?

Last but not least, you can also cruise without a passport to Canada and New England. Canada/New England cruise itineraries are seasonal, running from May to October with the majority of sailings occurring during the Fall.

As native New Englanders, we sometimes take the fall foliage for granted. However, this seasonal change is a sight to behold for many.

Popular ports of call include Boston, MA; Bar Harbor, ME; Portland, ME; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and St. John, New Brunswick. Each of these ports offers its own historic and coastal charm.

In our homeport of Boston, you can learn more about the founding of the United States by trekking the Boston Freedom Trail. You can dive into the history of the Titanic when in Halifax. Or, you can see the Victorian era architecture and historic homes of Portland and visit Arcadia National Park in Bar Harbor.

Our local cuisine is another great reason to cruise to Canada and New England. Portland is home to the one and only Maine Lobster, but the waters off these coasts are home to other seafood delights as well. You can enjoy a rich and creamy cup of New England clam chowder or some Rhode Island style calamari. There are also plenty of sweet treats including maple syrup, whoopie pies, and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream from nearby Vermont.

Like Bermuda cruises, popular embarkation ports for Canada/New England cruises are in the Northeast. New York, Cape Liberty (NJ), Baltimore, and Boston are the most popular.

With cruising set to resume soon, there is no better time than the present to book a cruise. If you are new to cruising or seeking a tropical getaway, it is likely that you will choose a cruise that visits the Caribbean. Be prepared for your trip with our Top 30 Caribbean Cruise Tips. From booking, to planning and packing, and everything in between, we cover it all in this comprehensive post.

Top Caribbean Cruise Tips For Booking Your Cruise

Book Your Caribbean Cruise Early

Booking a cruise as far in advance as possible has several perks. It can certainly save you money. Plus, you will get the best selection of cabins. We tend to book most of our cruise vacations 8 months to a year or more in advance. In general, we have not found the price to get any cheaper over time. On the rare occasion that the price does drop after you’ve booked, you can usually get a price adjustment (be sure to read the fine print when booking though).

Use a Travel Agent to Book Your Caribbean Cruise

You can also save money when booking your cruise if you use a travel agent. The right travel agent can not only provide first time cruisers with a wealth of information during the decision-making process, but they can be beneficial to more seasoned cruisers as well.

Why?

They can give you PERKS for booking with them! These perks are of a monetary value that is not directly tied to your actual cruise fare. Think items like onboard credit, a free specialty dinner, free gratuities, and more.

Cheapest Time of Year to Cruise the Caribbean

Cruise fares fluctuate considerably depending on a few factors. Pricing can range widely depending on the cruise line, ship, itinerary, and time of year. If you have flexible vacation time, carefully selecting WHEN you cruise can have a big impact on your budget.

Norwegian Encore Cruise Review - Top Caribbean Cruise Tips

The summer, school breaks, and holidays tend to attract more crowds. Hence, these times of year are usually more expensive to cruise as well. We find January, once all the kids are back to school, to be one of the cheapest times of year to take a cruise

Hurricane Season in the Caribbean

The peak of the hurricane season in the Caribbean occurs from late August through the end of October. While this might be a turn-off to many, there are actually benefits to cruising during hurricane season. If you are willing to take this risk, you can score some amazing deals.

Plus, with advancements in hurricane tracking, the ships are usually able to avoid storms and find the tropical weather you are looking for during your vacation. However, you will need to be flexible as the ship could get re-routed if storms occur.

Best Weather in the Caribbean

If you are seeking the best weather in the Caribbean, you will probably want to cruise during the winter months of December to February. While Caribbean temperatures remain in the 70’s and 80’s most of the year, rainfall does fluctuate seasonally. This time of year is usually considered the “dry season”.

Plus, this is the perfect time to visit the Caribbean for many. Cruisers like ourselves love to escape the cold and snowy winter back at home for some tropical weather.

You Can Save Money By Booking a Guaranteed Cabin on Your Cruise

If you want to save some money when booking your Caribbean cruise, you should also consider securing a guaranteed cabin. When you book a guaranteed cabin, you are selecting a category type, whether it is an inside room, balcony, or suite. Although, you are not selecting the precise cabin number.

With a “guarantee” status, you are locked into a room of that category but will not know your exact room location until closer to the sailing date. There is even the chance for an upgrade with this option.

All Cruise Lines Sail the Caribbean

The Caribbean is one of the most popular cruise destinations. Given its popularity, the Caribbean offers the widest variety of ships from all cruise lines with various price points. From family friendly cruise lines, to cruise lines that appeal to couples, to luxurious, all-inclusive experiences, there is truly no single best cruise line for a Caribbean cruise.

Truthfully, it all depends on what you want in a cruise vacation. Further, each cruise line will likely have multiple ships of varying sizes with different amenities sailing the region.

Caribbean Cruise Itineraries

Caribbean cruises also offer a variety of different itineraries. While the most popular cruise length is 7 days, you can also find shorter and longer options. Further, itineraries in this region are generally divided into Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean routes visiting popular islands in each of these geographic areas. Which islands are visited does vary slightly by the ship and cruise line. These Caribbean itineraries might even include stops at the cruise lines’ private destinations.

Many of the Newest Ships Sail the Caribbean

If you are looking to cruise on the latest and greatest ships, then you are in luck. Most cruise lines deploy their newest ships to the Caribbean. Many of the best cruise ships for 2021 will cruise the Caribbean for at least part of the year.

Carnival Mardi Gras Further Delayed

These ships include Carnival Mardi Gras, Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas, Celebrity Apex, and the brand new Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady. Of course, these new ships have higher demand, so a Caribbean cruise on one of them will likely come at a higher price point.

Variety of Embarkation Ports for Caribbean Cruises

If you are looking to book a Caribbean cruise, you will also have some variety when it comes to the embarkation port. While Florida (Miami, Port Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale) is the most common departure point for Caribbean cruises, there are some additional options.

Related Post: Top Things to Do Near Port Canaveral

Southern Caribbean itineraries often depart from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Depending on the cruise line, you can also find cruises departing from southern ports like Galveston, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Tampa, Florida among others.

Caribbean cruises might also depart from more northern ports like New York; Cape Liberty, New Jersey; or Baltimore, Maryland.

Top Caribbean Cruise Tips For Planning Your Cruise

It’s Not Just About the Beach

While many people cruise the Caribbean to enjoy the tropical weather and sandy beaches, the Caribbean offers much more than just beach escapes.

You will have endless options on how to spend your day ashore. If this is your first time visiting a port of call, you might want to book a sightseeing tour. If you are the adventurous type, then you will want to catch your latest thrill by zip-lining, horseback riding, hiking in a rainforest, or exploring in an off-road vehicle.

Many add-on items like drink packages can be purchased pre-cruise on the cruise line’s website. Using the cruise planner, you can often pre-purchase these items at a reduced cost.

Follow the Rules on Your Cruise Ship

In order to ensure an enjoyable cruise for both you and your fellow ship mates, be sure to comply with the rules and regulations of the cruise line. Certain things like smoking on your cabin balcony, sneaking alcohol or drugs on the ship, and becoming confrontational with crew are never allowed.

Further, use common sense and don’t risk falling overboard by climbing or sitting on rails. Once cruising resumes, guests will also be required to comply with new health and safety measures including wearing a mask in designated areas. Failure to abide by these rules can result in your removal from the ship.

Oh yeah, and be courteous to other guests by not being a chair hog on the pool deck!
